Excerpt from Horse Portraiture: Embracing Breeding, Rearing, and Training Trotters, With Their Management in the Stable and on the Track, and Preparation for Races; Including Histories of the Horse and Horsemen The treatment advised is no pet theory, but the result of years of practice, when the effects of any change in the work was anxiously watched for and carefully noticed. The system, as here exemplified, I have found the best that has come under my observation, and I do not hesitate to rest my name as a horseman on the award of those who will give it a faithful trial. The chapters on sweating, food, and drink are not offered as being scientifically correct in a veterinary view. The want of a medical education would have prevented me from writing such a treatise, if I had been ambitious to do so; but the results deduced I know to be correct from the practical tests of every seasons experience in training horses.
