In accordance with Henry Knox's previous request, William reports on the character of [William Green], who he refers to as Mr. G. Says that a mutual acquaintance has no exalted opinion of Mr. G. although he could not say any thing against him either respecting his personal character or that he has not a large property. William could not ascertain the number of shares Green holds in the bank. Comfort Sands gave a favorable report of Green's character. Nonetheless, William advises Knox to be careful in his negotiations with Green.
Discusses Knox's current business with William Duer. States that reassignment is essential to their security, and hopes Knox will allow his brother William, or another person in New York, to sign for him in order to speed the matter along.
Forwards Knox an edited draft of a memorandum Knox had sent him before (not included). Noted as a copy.
Asks his brother if there is any business to be done before he leaves New York. Says that he will remain in the area until the following Wednesday or Thursday, and, During that period it shall be my object to ascertain... every thing respecting the character, integrity, punctuality and general circumstances of Mr. G[reen]. William cautions his brother to proceed with caution in his financial dealings with Green, advising him to do business with Green as if he was a perfect stranger. Encloses a release (not included). Asks for his signature for a document related to his business with William Duer. Sends a draft of a reassignment for Knox to browse. Further discusses the business related to Duer, urging Knox to hurry so that no time is to be lost.
Replies to Green's letter from 25 October (GLC02437.05666). Discusses their financial agreement in detail, stating that if payments are not secured by the times they had previously designated, and if Green is out of the country, Knox's family could be overwhelmed with ruin. In his closing paragraph, Knox writes, An idea you expressed in New York of making the 2d payment in June next appears to me to be pregnant with evil...
Informs Green that he has received his letters and will make a reply once he contacts Mr. Jarvis.
Discusses land business in regards to their agreements with William Duer. Says regardless if Duer decides to hold out, he has no claim against him or Green. Continues to discuss his recent negotiations with Duer and his decision to accept other offers: Some Gentlemen have made me certain offers, which it is my interest to accept and if so, it will not be in my favor to admit any other [person].
Writes that William Durer said he could not address a business matter until he hears from Knox. Green wrote Duer a letter, a copy of which he encloses (not present) along with Duer's answer. Asks for Knox's opinion on the matter.
