Responds to an earlier letter he received from Green regarding advancement of payments. Notes the sum of [dollar sign] 35,000 that Green has proposed is less than the [dollar sign] 39,000 that Knox originally requested. Asks Green to further review the proposition. Continues to discuss land deals and his situation with William Duer.
Discusses business transactions dealing with various amounts of money. [dollar sign] 20,000 and [dollar sign] 5,000 are needed to complete the payment which will become due in sixty days after the survey shall be notified; and upon the puctuality of which, the validity of the agreement with the state will most materially depend. Goes on to write about further payments which are due and a difficult situation with William Duer concerning a purchase of land. Content suggests Henry Knox as the author and was previously assessed as such. Light water damage as blurred some lines in the lower left corner. Letterpress copy. Watermarked.
Writes that William Durer said he could not address a business matter until he hears from Knox. Green wrote Duer a letter, a copy of which he encloses (not present) along with Duer's answer. Asks for Knox's opinion on the matter.
Replies to Green's letter from 25 October (GLC02437.05666). Discusses their financial agreement in detail, stating that if payments are not secured by the times they had previously designated, and if Green is out of the country, Knox's family could be overwhelmed with ruin. In his closing paragraph, Knox writes, An idea you expressed in New York of making the 2d payment in June next appears to me to be pregnant with evil...
Forwards Knox an edited draft of a memorandum Knox had sent him before (not included). Noted as a copy.
Discusses papers he has copied and transcribed for Knox dealing with William Duer, with his opinions on each point.
Discusses his current situation in regards to land deals and loan terms. Provides instructions on which payments to the loans should be made and when. Notes he will try to send Green a copy of the agreement. Docketed by Knox.
Asks his brother to investigate the character of William Green, especially in relation to his integrity and punctuality. Calls for this investigation because of his financial involvement with Green (refer to GLC02437.05666).
Discusses land business in regards to their agreements with William Duer. Says regardless if Duer decides to hold out, he has no claim against him or Green. Continues to discuss his recent negotiations with Duer and his decision to accept other offers: Some Gentlemen have made me certain offers, which it is my interest to accept and if so, it will not be in my favor to admit any other [person].
