Tries to make arrangements to travel to New York, which have so far been unsuccessful. Also discusses his difficulty in selling his property in the Eastern lands and his want of funds as a result.
Informs Duer he called on Herman Le Roy and [Th?ophile] Cazenove the day before to discuss the eastern lands, especially the sale of Duer's portion. Notes he tried pushing forth a sale of Duer's portion of land in every way and manner possible but was informed that they would not be interested in a purchase until Mr. Morris's return and possibly not even then. Expresses his surprise over this news as he was under the impression from Duer that the gentlemen would be willing to negotiate. The men stated that regardless of Duer's impression they were not ready to move forward with the deal and that Mr. Le Roy intended to write Duer to this effect (see GLC02437.05733). Goes into further detail of other avenues Duer may need to consider along with other land negotiations. Date previously inferred, written in red.
Discusses business regarding land. States he received Duer's express today with his terms and has given them to Mr. [William] Bingham who is taking them under consideration. Has no doubt that the terms will be accepted. Tells him to Be of good courage - it shall go - even if I [sacrifice] still more for your sake...
Discusses an agreement between them concerning land. Notes he was in hopes of hearing Duer's decision on whether he will be selling his land.
Informs Duer that he has not heard anything new concerning the Eastern Lands and is trying to bring the matter to a conclusion even if I am compelled to make greater sacrifices than I have yet contemplated. Believes he will succeed.
Says the letter is being delivered by Mr. Bauncol, the agent to Monsieur D'Espremenil. Duer reports he offered D'Espremenil a part of township 7 before he sold his stake in the Eastern Lands to Knox and William Bingham. This was done because D'Espremenil ceded lands in the Scioto purchase and became a sutler there. Believes this was a fair deal and hopes Knox and Bingham will live up to the agreement.
Discusses his reasons for terminating his financial agreement with William Green and mentions other avenues he is considering. Notes he has made overtures to [Th?ophile] Cazenove, and after receiving Duer's pressing letters decided it best to try to push forward an agreement with [William] Bingham. Assures him he will do everything in his power to finalize a sale most advantageous to Duer. Notes Cazenove has offered to purchase one million [acres?] of the Kennebec and continues to discuss in detail the status of various other deals he is trying to negotiate on Duer's behalf.
Marked Confidential. Apologizes for not answering Knox's letter sooner. Discusses his difficulty in keeping to his part of the contract with Knox. Is unable to find funds to buy a tract of land. Describes his circumstances and why he is unable to buy the land as he had hoped. Also discusses his future and the likelihood of his imprisonment and the effect it will have on his family.
Discusses land deals and contracts. Informs him Jackson is heading his way and will deliver Duer the [dollar sign] 50,000 in notes plus interest. The accounts will then be liquidated. Instructs him and Colonel Walker to deliver to Jackson all papers, including all agreements and contracts dealing with this matter. Continues to discuss lands deals concerning Jackson, Royal Flint, [Madam] de Leval, [Jean-Baptise] de la Roche, and [William] Bingham. Dated from docket.
Discusses concerns about an agreement with Mr. [William] Green: As Mr Green has not to my knowledge any great fixed property in this Country, and as he objects to any guarantee of his bonds, although going abroad, an apprehension is excited in my mind that by some fatal accidents, I may have parted with the property and yet have the bonds to pay. Relates that he requested a legal agreement from Green to protect his rights, ensuring Green will continue to make payments on the bonds while in Europe (GLC02437.05675). Discusses potential consequences if Green refuses. Instructs Duer to withhold legal rights to Green until he receives further instructions from Knox. Docket notes that this document was sent under cover to Shaw and Randall.
