Ask yourself what's the most important thing in your life? Your answer should be "my life" because from your perspective, without life, nothing else much matters. In fact, when drafting the US Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson listed the word "life" first in the well-known description of unalienable rights: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Each year, instead of spending our dollars on things that we know will keep us healthy such as nutritious foods, exercise, and time off from work, we spend more of our dollars to fund health care conglomerates (private and government) so that they can control the "best" way to spend and ration these dollars for us (right down to a $65 medical office visit). In effect, by participating in the status quo, we've given away our unalienable right (to stay healthy) to self-interested third party payers. Look at the healthiest person you know -is this person healthy because he carries the most expensive health insurance plan or participates in a large, government guaranteed health care system? This book uncovers the flaws of the health care debate and shows the reader how to work within our current medical system to regain control over their individual health and well-being.
This book carries a message of hope and life to nurses in a troubled and challenging profession. It is the power boost every nurse needs today. Readers experience the real reason behind the nurse's behavior: Caring. Why and how do we care? Do we care enough? How can we keep on caring? Where is the Source of Caring? Readers embark on this exciting journey through the life of the nurse: her joys, sorrows, achievements, and crosses. They visit the nurse's mysterious dimension of faith. They laugh and cry, and become inspired and refreshed. Some will be inspired to study Nursing, others will try to be better nurses, while yet others will decide to stay in Nursing even longer. NOW FEATURING A NEW AFTERWORD, "PANDEMIC ETHICS" From two eminent scholars comes a provocative examination of bioethics and our culture’s obsession with having it all without paying the price. Shockingly, the United States has among the lowest life expectancies and highest infant mortality rates of any high-income nation, yet, as Amy Gutmann and Jonathan D. Moreno show, we spend twice as much per capita on medical care without insuring everyone. A “remarkable, highly readable journey” (Judy Woodruff ) sure to become a classic on bioethics, Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die explores the troubling contradictions between expanding medical research and neglecting human rights, from testing anthrax vaccines on children to using brain science for marketing campaigns. Providing “a clear and compassionate presentation” (Library Journal) of such complex topics as radical changes in doctor-patient relations, legal controversies over in vitro babies, experiments on humans, unaffordable new drugs, and limited access to hospice care, this urgent and incisive history is “required reading for anyone with a heartbeat” (Andrea Mitchell).
