The Hindu sect the Vallabha Sampradaya was founded in India in the 15th century by a devotional saint, Vallabhacharya. Their bhakti tradition worships a variety of forms of Krishna as a seven-year-old child. Following U.S. immigration reforms in 1965, members of the sect established a spiritual headquarters for the faith in Pennsylvania and began to construct temples across the United States. Since then, the growth has continued as this 500-year-old faith becomes an American religion, as this work demonstrates.

This Was Particularly So Of Painting, And What Began As An Offshoot Of Mughal Painting Because In The Years Between The Inception Of Mughal Rule And The British Occupation Of India From The 18Th Century, There Was A Rich Flowering Of Many Schools And Styles Of Miniature Painting Which Have Found Avid Admirers Among Connoisseurs Of Art The World Over. Unfortunately, Although Rajasthani Paintings Are Treasured Art Collectors Items Much Sought After By Discerning Lovers Of Art Because Of Their Intrinsic Merit, Little Effort Has Been Expended To Delve Deep Into The Various Modes Of This Painting And Present An Overall Picture Of The Numerous Schools, Styles And Substyles Which Are The Priceless Heritage Today Not Only Of Rajasthan, Their Place Of Birth, But Also Of India As A Whole. Art Experts, Mainly Foreign Savants, Have Written Knowledgeable Accounts About Various Aspects Of Rajasthani Painting, But Nobody, It Is Worth Recording, Has Undertaken To Produce A Comprehensive Study In Depth Of This Vast Cultural Field. This Is Absolutely Essential As No Study Of Indian Civilization Is Complete Without It. The Present Study Does Not Claim To Fulfil This Requirement. That Would Need Much More Intensive, Detailed And Patient Research. But It Provides A Good Point Of Takeoff For Such A Study. Whether in North India or South India, Hindu or Muslim, urban or village, virtually all things, people, and social groups are ranked according to various essential qualities. Although India is a political democracy, notions of complete equality are seldom evident in daily life. Societal hierarchy is evident in caste groups, amongst individuals, and in family and kinship groups. Castes are primarily associated with Hinduism, but caste-like groups also exist among Muslims, Indians, Christians, and other religious communities. Within most villages or towns, everyone knows the relative rankings of each locally represented caste, and behaviour is constantly shaped by this knowledge. Individuals are also ranked according to their wealth and power. For example, some powerful people, or “big men,” sit confidently on chairs, while “little men” come before them to make requests, either standing or squatting not presuming to sit beside a man of high status as an equal. Hierarchy plays an important role within families and kinship groupings also, where men outrank women of similar age, and senior relatives outrank junior relatives. Formal respect is accorded to family members—for example, in northern India, a daughter-in-law shows deference to her husband, to all senior in-laws, and to all daughters of the household. Siblings, too, recognize age differences, with younger siblings addressing older siblings by respectful terms rather than by name.
