**THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER** Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Roxy Music's iconic first album with this collection of Bryan Ferry's evocative lyrics of aspiration and romantic longing, introduced by the author. 'Lyrics is a book any Roxy fan would be proud to have on their shelf' The Telegraph Bryan Ferry's work as a singer and songwriter, both as a solo artist and with Roxy Music, is legendary. Lyrics collects the words written for music across seventeen albums, from the first iconic Roxy album of 1972 via the masterpiece of Avalon to 2014's reflective Avonmore, introduced by the author, and with an insightful essay by James Truman. All the classic Roxy anthems are here - 'Virginia Plain', 'Do the Strand', 'Love is the Drug' - songs in which the real and the make-believe blend in a kaleidoscopic mix, shot through with cinematic allure. Also included are the evocative lyrics of romantic longing and lost illusions for which Ferry is rightly revered: 'Slave to Love', 'Mother of Pearl', 'More Than This'. As he writes in his preface, 'The low points in life so often produce the most keenly felt and best-loved songs.' And, it might be added, some of the best poetry. Discover this unforgettable collection of Bryan Ferry's work today.
"Compiled in 940 at the court of the kingdom of Shu, the Huajian ji is the earliest extant collection of song lyrics by literati poets. The collection has traditionally been studied as the precursor to the lyrics of the Song dynasty, or in terms of what it contributed to the later development of the genre. But scholars have rarely examined the work as an anthology, and have more often focused on the work of individual poets and their respective contributions to the genre. In this book, Anna Shields examines the influence of court culture on the creation of the anthology and the significance of imitation and convention in its lyrics. Shields suggests that by considering the Huajian ji only in terms of its contributions to a later “model,” we unnecessarily limit ourselves to a single literary form, and risk overlooking the broader influence of Tang culture on the Huajian ji. By illuminating the historical and literary contexts of the anthology, the author aims to situate the Huajian ji within larger questions of Chinese literary history, particularly the influence of cultural forces on the emergence of genres and the development of romantic literature."

Nora Eldridge, a 37-year-old elementary school teacher in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is on the verge of disappearing. Having abandoned her desire to be an artist, she has become the "woman upstairs," a reliable friend and tidy neighbour always on the fringe of others' achievements. Then into her classroom walks a new pupil, Reza Shahid, a child who enchants as if from a fairy tale. He and his parents--dashing Skandar, a half-Muslim Professor of Ethical History born in Beirut, and Sirena, an effortlessly glamorous Italian artist--have come to America for Skandar to teach at Harvard. But one afternoon, Reza is attacked by schoolyard bullies who punch, push and call him a "terrorist," and Nora is quickly drawn deep into the complex world of the Shahid family. Soon she finds herself falling in love with them, separately and together. Nora's happiness explodes her boundaries--until Sirena's own ambition leads to a shattering betrayal. Written with intimacy and piercing emotion, this urgently dispatched story of obsession and artistic fulfillment explores the thrill--and the devastating cost--of giving in to one's passions. The Woman Upstairs is a masterly story of America today, of being a woman and of the exhilarations of love.
He hid the truth to spare her heart, even as it broke his. Five years ago, Bethany lost her husband, a world-famous actor, in a freak accident. Since then, she has rebuilt her life away from the limelight in her small Norwegian hometown. But her peace is about to be destroyed. A vengeful co-star is preparing to publish a vicious tell-all book to smear her late husband’s name. Refusing to stand by and allow his memory to be tarnished, Bethany scrambles to release her own biography to celebrate his legacy. To make that happen, she needs mementos and stories from his childhood. That means swallowing her pride and asking for help from his brother, Lukas, who’s always treated her with icy indifference. Lukas knew his brother never deserved Bethany. The selfish, narcissistic rogue swept her off her feet while keeping her in the dark about the unsavory and immoral corners of his life. The only way Lukas could protect his own heart and integrity was to keep Bethany at arm’s length and avoid blurting out his feelings for her. She deserved better… to be treasured and adored. Knowing he could never fill that role, he hid his attraction and his guilt, and allowed her to believe he despised her. Now, as she turns to him to help memorialize his brother, Lukas faces an impossible choice. If he lets her discover the truth, he’ll open up a long-awaited chance to confess his feelings for her. But the full truth will also reveal his own role in hiding a closet full of skeletons. Within the Storm is Book 3 in Milla Holt’s Seasons of Faith Christian romance series.
