This bulletin provides guidelines for building owners, specifiers, building contractors and painters. This Bulletin replaces numbers 253 (1987), Maintenance Painting of Coated Steel Structures. The protection of steel exposed to exterior corrosion is a complex and extensive subject. This bulletin only covers the critical factors to be considered when assessing the materials and the standard of work necessary for the maintenance of steelwork in buildings. Some detailed advice is given on the maintenance of smaller work, but for all major maintenance projects reference should be made to: AS/NZS 2312:1994 Guide to the protection of iron and steel against exterior atmospheric corrosion; paint manufacturers.
