This volume looks at how courts and the police handle racial discrimination in Europe. The chapters show that beyond legal technique, neither the legislators nor the judges escape from their own emotions when responding to racial discrimination. But, as the authors point out, emotions are not always negative. They can also help in a positive way in judicial interpretation. The study profiles five countries: Germany, UK, Estonia, Portugal and Spain. Each of these belong both to the European Union and to the Council of Europe. Coverage examines the responsibility of the public powers, more specifically of the legislative and judicial power, both of the police and of the judiciary, in persecuting racist behavior. In addition, the authors also consider the increase in racism in groups of citizens. The authors argue that racial justice is a proactive reinforcement of policies, practices, attitudes and actions that lead to equal access to opportunities for all. After reading this book, readers will gain a better understanding of the reasoning of legislators, police and judges when dealing with racial discrimination in Europe today.

This book provides an updated comparative overview of women’s movements in Latin America and the Caribbean, filling some of the gaps left by the existing literature. It brings together case studies of nine countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru – and includes a comparative analysis of the overall evolution of women’s rights movements across the region during the past decades. This analysis shows Latin America as the home to the largest, strongest, and most densely regionally and globally interconnected women’s rights movements in the Global South. Each chapter in this volume seeks to understand where the struggles for women’s rights come from, how they stand today and where they are headed to. To do so, they all use qualitative methodologies, and most resort to first-hand accounts of the processes described and reflections by the actors on their own experiences, collected through surveys, in-depth interviews and/or ethnographic observations. The comparative analysis of the different national case studies reveals the main struggles in which women’s rights movements are currently involved in Latin America and the Caribbean: the quest for political representation within the State and its political institutions; the fight against gender violence and the struggle for sexual and reproductive rights – especially abortion rights. Este es un libro enfocado en las organizaciones en general, donde se analiza con sentido multidisciplinario las interacciones y formas de vida de las personas para comprender que su ordenación esta determinada y se relaciona con la orientación seguida por la sociedad y la cultura. Se hace referencia cierta al dilema confianza-desconfianza como característica peculiar de la crisis que se vive en el entorno institucional latinoamericano producto de un estilo de pensamiento esquizoparanoide desarrollado en muchos adultos por múltiples factores y elementos intrínsecos propios, en su mayoría vinculados con el impulso silencioso de las fuerzas ambientales y el poder de mando en todas sus perspectivas. En el libro se discuten y abarcan, por lo menos, tres grupos temáticos diferenciados y relacionados con la desconfianza: 1) Como en América Latina y el Caribe, las diferencias culturales y de producción de las personas han interactuado con las experiencias de desigualdades sostenidas y desarrolladas permanentemente para crear e impulsar la incredulidad y la desconfianza 2) Como numerosos factores extrínsecos (políticos, económicos, educativos, jurídicos, tecnológicos y otros) han afectado los comportamientos, el rendimiento, y las formas de intercambio de las personas, a través de las transformaciones históricas de la región, influyendo en la desconfianza de la gente, y 3) Como el conocimiento sobre factores humanos intrínsecos puede ayudar a los directivos y gerentes para anticipar, dirigir, y aprovechar de manera institucional programas de medición y transformación con acciones positivas para promover y mejorar el aprendizaje y la confianza. A partir de un estudio de las diversas normas de los organismos regionales de control basadas en los estandares de derecho internacional humanitario se realiza un analisis mundial de las diversas formas que adquiere la violencia de genero en perjuicio, principalmente, de las mujeres y personas LGTB. El delito de violencia de genero puede incluir, entre otros, el aborto selectivo en funcion del sexo, infanticidio femenino, trafico de personas, violaciones sexuales durante periodo de guerra, homicidios a causa de la dote, matrimonios forzados, ataques homofobicos hacia personas o grupos LGTB, etc. Luego de analizar los muestreos de los casos en los diversos paises del mundo, posiblemente se generen interrogantes intelectuales acerca de la situacion real en occidente y oriente y de la necesidad de realizar un trabajo mancomunado mundial en aras de lograr que la igualdad de genero deje de ser una utopia y un precepto meramente declarativo.
This volume addresses some lacunae in Hispanic linguistic research by focusing on new scholarly directions, exploring understudied topics as well as speech communities, and presenting new takes on relevant linguistic and sociocultural issues. This publication answers questions which have emerged as a result of the rapid increase in Hispanic linguistic research since the latter part of the twentieth century or that have remained open in spite of it. With the rapid growth of Hispanic Linguistics during the 21st century, the topics included in this volume are representative of the breadth, vitality, and interdisciplinarity of contemporary linguistic scholarship. They also reflect that linguistics, in general, has become more methodologically sophisticated. This book is comprised of twelve chapters divided into three parts. Part I addresses language ideology and language contact issues that are embedded in important sociolinguistic and cultural topics chronologically spanning from the 16th century to the present. Although these issues take place in Spain, the United States, Turkey and Ecuador, they pertain ideologically to all corners of the Hispanic World and beyond. Part II is devoted to pragmatics and language variation with topics that transport us to Colombia, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela. The study of politeness strategies shows how Spanish speakers reduce social distance between interlocutors as they make conversation a pleasant and cooperative meeting place. Concurrently, sociolinguistic innovations reveal interesting parallels among several speech communities. Part III explores linguistic variation as it relates to theoretical, structural, and instructional issues. Although these topics are analyzed based mainly on linguistic usage in Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, and Spain – as with the rest of this volume – their relevance reaches far beyond the confines of the Hispanic World. This book is unique in multiple ways and complements a number of existing publications.
