TRB's Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) Report 70: Guidebook for Implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems Elements to Improve Airport Traveler Access Information provides descriptions, component details, and examples of how airport ground access information can be disseminated using various intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies. The guidebook contains tables to help airport operators determine the applicability of certain ITS strategies based on airport operational needs and airport size. Airport employees are vital to the operation of an airport. They staff the airport on a daily basis from well before the first flight operation until after the last flight operation, which at many airports is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Airport employees generate a significant number of vehicle trips to and from the airport each day, which impacts air quality, airport traffic conditions, and traffic in the communities surrounding the airport and on the freeway system. The purpose of this report was to determine what is known about airport employee commute patterns and commute modes, what programs are being offered to airport employees by the airport operator or a transportation management association (TMA) to provide them with alternatives to the drive alone commute to work, how progress is being monitored, what is known about the effectiveness of airport employee commute options (ECO) programs, what the challenges are for the providers of such programs, and to research some ECO programs offered by non-airport employers for program elements that may have applicability in the airport environment. This report was accomplished through a literature search of airport employee commute programs, commute programs offered by non-airport employers that may have applicability in the airport environment, and through interviews with four U.S. and one U.K. airport operators (of 16 airports and 3 TMAs identified, 84 percent interviewed) that offer comprehensive airport ECO programs. Each of the five case studies provides an example of how ECO strategies are applied in the airport environment.
Making a detailed contribution to geographies of air transport and aeromobility, this book examines the practices and processes that produce particular patterns of air transport provision both regionally and globally. In so doing, it updates the seminal contributions of Eva Taylor (1945), Kenneth Sealy (1957), Brian Graham (1995) and others to the study of air transport geography. Although globalization and liberalization processes have greatly expanded the demand for air transport over the last two decades, the industry has experienced several major setbacks due to economic, security, and environmental concerns. Many of these impacts have been much more pronounced in some regions, such as North America and Europe while others, such as Asia-Pacific have not been as adversely affected. Accordingly, there is a clear need to examine these recent economic and geopolitical changes from a geographical perspective given the differentiated pattern of effects from global processes. Addressing this need, this volume opens with thematic chapters covering key topics such as the historical geographies, socio-cultural mobilities, environmental externalities, urban geographies, and sustainability of the global air transport industry, followed by regional analysis of the industry in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Greater Middle East and Africa as well as North America and Europe.
