Excerpt from Green Leaves From Life's Garden My hammock was swung beneath the shade of two chestnut trees. One, large, full, overhanging with branches that hung low; the other, small and thick, but they mingled their branches together over my head in beautiful confusion. I faced the body of the large tree, and in the morning as I lay there, I gazed up through the body of the tree which was not too thick to see generous glimpses of blue sky between. How I grew to love that tree; every leaf seemed to be an individual companion. The upper branches that caught the sunshine were filled with light; some leaves glis tened like silver, some as they caught the sun's rays gleamed with iridescent color, and seemed as they waved in the breeze to be prismatic in their beauty. Excerpt from Leaves of Life Day by day we add them, these Leaves of Life, to the great Book of Time. Let us endeavor to make each day's leaf a clean one, free of blotch or smear. If there be grief and failure let us trace it plainly, without fear or shame; if there be joy and success let it stand forth in all its glory, shorn of pride or false modesty. That which we do is ours, so let us strive to do it well, fearing neither man nor God; and at the end, when the final score is marked in the great Book of Time, we may look upon our work, and say simply, It is ours. Excerpt from Green Leaves: Poems To the Public: - As it is customary to preface a few lines to introduce any new work, and as I like to know something of the personality of the writer, I will introduce this little volume by giving a few brief incidents in my own life. In case you are inclined to criticize, you will please pass the errors and excuse them; while if there is merit, I hope you readers will find pleasure in reading these poems. The writing of them has helped me to pass many hours which would otherwise have been very tedious. They have been written with my left hand, as I have been without my right one for a great many years. Notwithstanding, I have always made a comfortable living, never have had to beg, and have managed to pay my honest debts. Calling on seventy-five years of memories and lessons learned, Emilie Griffin reflects on the beauty and struggle of aging. Hers is a deceptively simple spiritual path--motivated only by a desire to be close to the Lord. Ideal for both individuals and discussion groups.
Excerpt from Leaves From a Life I was born in the year 1848, and I only wish I could recollect the events of that stirring epoch. Naturally I cannot, but I have always had an idea that the storm and stress of the period, the unrest and upheaval of most things which occurred then, influenced me in some mysterious manner, and made me a rebel against most of the forms and ceremonies that in a great measure deform and cripple a most delightful world.
