Excerpt from Greek and Roman Versification: With an Introduction on the Development of Ancient Versification It is not easy in a handbook, which should be at once thoroughly scientific, brief, and generally intelligible, to satisfy all fair demands, not to mention the unfair. The task was all the harder because, although for a long time I have had a lively interest in the practical questions of classical philology as well as in the needs of the gymnasia, still on account of my position I have come but little into direct touch with these institutions, and so have been deprived of the equally inspiring and manifold impressions produced by daily immediate contact with youth. So much the more grateful ought I to be, that experienced teachers of different countries have assisted me with their advice. They were also, almost without exception, of the Opinion that I should treat in only a cursory way of the lyrical parts of the Greek tragedy.
