Great Lakes restoration management : no direction, unknown progress : hearing before the Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce and the District of Columbia Subcommittee of the Committee on Governmental Affairs, United States Senate, One Hundred Eighth Congress, first session, July 16, 2003.
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) seeks to address issues such as water quality contamination and nonnative, or "invasive," species that threaten the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. A Task Force of 11 federal agencies, chaired by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, oversees the GLRI. Task Force agencies conduct work themselves or through agreements with nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions, or other entities. This report examines the (1) amount of federal funds made available for the GLRI and expended for projects; (2) process the Task Force used to identify GLRI work and funding; and (3) information available about GLRI project activities and results. Tables and figures. This is a print on demand report.
The Great Lakes ecosystem is recognised by many as an international natural resource that has been altered by human activities and climate variability. These alterations have led to degraded water quality, diminished habitat, lower native fish and wildlife populations, and an altered ecosystem. In response, the federal governments of the United States and Canada and the state and provincial governments in the Great Lakes basin are implementing several restoration activities. These activities range from mitigating the harmful effects of toxic substances in lake waters to restoring fish habitat. This books provides the reader with a background on and issues of the Great Lakes restoration initiative, as well as the action plan for the years 2010-2014.
