Is there anything new to say about Thomas Jefferson and slavery? The answer is a resounding yes. This fifth volume of news clippings from the historic issues of the Walker County, Jasper Mountain Eagle spans the years 1910 through 1913. Practically every issue from the time period is represented. All other issues are represented. Missing issues include Feb 21 and Dec 11 from 1912; and Jun 25 and Nov 26 from 1913. These clippings from the Mountain Eagle come from microfilm purchased from the State Archives in Montgomery. Every issue of the Eagle was examined column by column to capture all available information regarding births, deaths, marriage notices, and relevant news items and information regarding the early history of Walker County and the surrounding area. Death notices were compared against available cemetery records at FindAGrave.com and were annotated. The history of Walker County is written in the pages of its early newspapers. This book will be a valuable asset to the serious student of Walker County genealogy and history.
The story took place in Snowy Mountain in the coldest part of Manchuria, one Winter's morning in 1781. The Dragon Lodge party ran into the Horse Spring Banditry who were there to unearth a buried casket. They were waylaid yet by the Peking Overland Convoy. All three parties had designs on the metal casket, supposedly housing a poniard, which was an heirloom of the Martial Brotherhood. A monk arrived on the scene and the invited the parties to the eyrie on the summit. The lord of the eyrie happened to be away summoning help to fight Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, who was scheduled to arrive on the summit at noon. While waiting, each one in the parties began recounting incidents which took place some twenty years before. The excitement, intrigue and action in these incidents are well dramatized, with one event firmly intertwining with others in the past, developing into a vendetta involving the offspring of several families. The story ends with a fight between Fox, the hero of the story, and his sworn enemy, but the result of the fight is untold, left to the imagination and creative power of individual readers.
First-hand accounts of travel provide windows into places unknown to the reader, or new ways of seeing familiar places. In Jade Mountains and Cinnabar Pools, the first book-length treatment in English of Chinese travel literature (youji), James M. Hargett identifies and examines core works in the genre, from the Six Dynasties period (220–581), when its essential characteristics emerged, to its florescence in the late Ming dynasty (1368–1644). He traces the dynamic process through which the genre, most of which was written by scholars and officials, developed, and shows that key features include a journey toward an identifiable place; essay or diary format; description of places, phenomena, and conditions, accompanied by authorial observations, comments, and even personal feelings; inclusion of sensory details; and narration of movement through space and time. Travel literature’s inclusion of a variety of writing styles and purposes has made it hard to delineate. Hargett finds, however, that classic pieces of Chinese travel literature reveal much about the author, his values, and his view of the world, which in turn tells us about the author’s society, making travel literature a rich source of historical information.
