How do you approach teaching English in the modern classroom? What is expected of a would-be English teacher? This best-selling textbook combines theory and practice to present a broad introduction to the opportunities and challenges of teaching English in secondary school classrooms. Each chapter explains the background to debates about teaching the subject and provides tasks, practical teaching approaches and further reading to explore issues and ideas in relation to school experience. Already a major text for many university teacher education courses, this new edition has been thoroughly updated in the light of recent revisions to the National Curriculum for English, examination syllabuses and the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status. As well as containing critical explorations of the history and definitions of the subject and policies such as the Secondary National Strategy that are appropriate to Professional and Masters level PGCE study, other chapters present a broad range of effective, innovative approaches to teaching such crucial areas as: reading and writing, speaking and listening; drama; media studies and information and communications technology; grammar, poetry and language study; Shakespeare; post-16 English language and literature. Written particularly with the new and student teacher in mind, this book offers principles and practical examples of teaching and learning within a 21st Century context in which new notions of literacy compete with demands of national assessment. Taking these changing principles as a starting point, the text also addresses questions about the nature of initial teacher preparation and raises issues concerning standards-based teacher education, mentoring in schools and monitoring the development of a student teacher.

This "A. K. M. A. L." Series of Level Based Comprehensive Grammar Review Workbook contains a large number of Grammar exercises so Ameer, Kim, Martha, Amy and Leila - more than 150 miscellaneous exercises - of 20 (twenty) items each that will help the student and user of the Workbook to review all the grammar structures, or points introduced and listed at the beginning of each level in the workbook (totaling 453 structural points, or Learning Objectives), which constitute the skeleton upon which the English Language builds and, without which an English sentence would not be intelligible. These Grammar Objectives are usually covered in the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels of the EFL Learning process. As you will notice, these Objectives, or structural points, are introduced at the beginning of each level with an example on each in order to be screened by users, and by teachers, if desired. They are italicized and organized in accordance with the level of complexity of the exercises. Leila and her peers will gradually move from the easiest, Beginner Level One, to the most advanced, Level Six, with confidence. Users of the workbook are, therefore, advised to answer all the exercises included in the workbook, and match their answers to the Answer keys provided at the end of each exercise, rather than at the end of the Workbook. For the sake of diversification as well as my willingness to have the users concentrate on different kinds of exercises, I have included some exercises where Leila and her peers, Kim, Mona, Jose, Ivan, Fahd and Alexey the main users, will choose the correct item and other Error Analysis Exercises where they will find out the error in grammar usage and try to correct it. It is worth noting, however that for the sake of evaluating our progress as learners and students I have included an Entry Self-Assessment Exercise which a user of the workbook is advised to do before starting the Review because it serves as a gateway to the book. It will also help in remembering the basics of the English Language Grammar on which a user will build progress and achieve the desired level of understanding of Grammar. An Exit Self-Assessment Exercise is also included to be done upon completing the Review Exercises. This will help determine areas of difficulty, if any. The Exit Exercise will show how much progress a user of the workbook has made in both, the grammar and vocabulary! The answers are provided at the end of the exercises but a user is advised not to look at the answers provided until he or she has answered all the questions. For those completing the exercises, the Workbook is intended as a gateway to success in post-high school endeavors of college life, social life and career of the likes of enthusiastic Leila and self-asserting Fahd, Kim, Nadia, Sami and Alexey! An appendix of answer keys is provided in the workbook which will help the user in his or her search for correctness by comparing answers with the Answer keys provided.
