It is not always possible for taste to follow a straight road, because it is linked to the social and political situations in which we live. Man's need to be more introspective - attracted by mysticism and non-rational figures, full of ancient, spiritual meaning - has produced a gothic look: made up forms that are complex, harsh, excessive, lacking color and very stylized. This look has evolved into a "new liberty," lightening the original heaviness, for example associating a skull with a spray of flowers. The gloominess of the times has felt the need to become lighter.
It is not always possible for taste to follow a straight road, because it is linked to the social and political situations in which we live. Man's need to be more introspective, attracted by mysticism and non-rational figures, full of ancient, spiritual meaning, has produced a look ever-present after '68: the "dark" look which took several roads up to the present time. A gothic look, made up of involutions, forms that are complex, harsh, excessive, lacking colour and very stylised. This "dark" look has evolved into a "new liberty", lightening the original heaviness, for example bringing a skull to be associated with a spray of flowers. The gloominess of the times has felt the need to become lighter. These stylistic features are synthetisised in Gothic Pop and the books of this series. The graphics in Gothic Pop Graphics Vol.1 are decidedly more complex , like a composition that unites different structures; one conceptual, that is the contents determined by images and text, the other decorative, made up of rounded signs, pseudonatural, spirals, leaves, pois, lines and concentric circles. The result is never the same each time, it usually avoids a symmetric geometric structure. Development occurs by themes dear to the young target of reference: from nature, music, love to sport and pacifism. Here, myth and rhetoric find an ironic tone that sometimes questions itself and proposes never banal visions. Of course this "Gothic Pop" can sometimes be decorative as in the textures, and sometimes expressive. These graphics certainly try to be both these things, in informal equilibrium, slightly "grunge". Containing gothic pop graphics, this resource features the following themes: Nature; Animals; Eco; City; Dark; Mystic; Love; Woman; Beat; Active; Play; War; Travel; Food; and, Next. From Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, A Gothic Cookbook focuses on thirteen different Gothic stories and their edible motifs before bringing them to life—and to your table. Delicious yet devious, this cookbook is a culinary and literary delight. Dracula lulls protagonist Jonathan Harker into a false sense of security with cold cuts and a spicy, smoky, peppery stew. Frankenstein’s “monster” starts out as a benign vegetarian, while Mrs. Poole’s overindulgence in Mother’s Ruin triggers Mr. Rochester’s downfall in Jane Eyre – and a bitter tangerine signals a sharp, yet unheeded, warning against marriage and Manderley in Rebecca. Notice, too, how a ghostly presence craves sugar and burnt bread in Toni Morrison’s Beloved... Inspired by Dr Alessandra Pino’s academic studies into how food manifests itself on the pages of Gothic literature and combining her knife-sharp analysis with Ella Buchan’s experience as a food writer and recipe developer, A Gothic Cookbook pays homage to the most appetizing cuts of the genre, featuring over sixty original recipes illustrated by Lee Henry. Including recipes such as: Mina's Chicken Paprikash from Bram Stoker's Dracula That Very Special Gingerbread from Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca Acorn Bread inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein And many more
Two years ago Wilson left his old boss alive in exchange for a clean slate, keeping up his end of the bargain and staying off the grid. Then, thousands of miles from the city he once escaped, a man comes calling on Wilson with a gun in hand and a woman in his trunk. Wilson is pulled back into his old life as a "grinder" to work under the radar to quietly find out who is responsible for a dangerous mobster's missing nephews and this time all bets are off.
Raucous, sensual and sublime: how twelve pioneering female artists rewrote the rules of pop. From Kate Bush to Nicki Minaj, from Janet Jackson to TLC and Taylor Swift, pop's greatest female pioneers are simply strange: smashing notions of taste and decorum, and replacing them with new ideals of pleasure. Instead of rehashing biographies, Lesley Chow dives deep into the music of these groundbreaking performers, identifying the ecstatic moments in their songs and finding out what makes them unique. You're History is a love letter to pop's most singular achievements, celebrating the innovations of women who are still critically underrated. It's a ride that includes tributes to Chaka Khan, Rihanna, Neneh Cherry, Sade, Shakespears Sister, Azealia Banks, and many more... “The slim, sharp book considers a range of female artists from Janet Jackson and Taylor Swift to TLC and Nicki Minaj, a group that the Australian cultural critic Chow views as ‘outliers, marking moments where the culture might have swerved to incorporate their influence, but somehow contrived not to.’” — New York Times summer reads
Highlighting a selection of artists who eschew the cold, minimalist aesthetic that afflicts contemporary art, this book explores the truly sinister, hyper-real, and riotous blend of pop culture, fine art, and surrealism that is Neo-Gothic art. Associated with punk and dark fantasy, yet distinct from both, these risk-taking artists are represented with a selection of hundreds of amazing paintings from the U.S. and European Neo-Gothic scene. Every painting is captioned in detail, many with explanations of the cutting-edge digital media with which they were created.
