* Cutting-edge information on how to prevent, diagnose, and treat altitude illness and hypoxia in everyday life * Interweaves fascinating research discoveries with dramatic first-person accounts * Authored by a celebrated mountaineer and physician who pioneered research in the field From the time of his historic expedition to Nanda Devi in the high Himalaya, Charles Houston, M.D., was fascinated by the effects of altitude on the human body. Why do people get sick in the mountains? What are the symptoms of hypoxia -- lack of sufficient oxygen -- that also occurs in everyday life, sometimes chronically due to disease? How can we decrease the incidence of illness and death? This edition incorporates current research on the effects of altitude on humans, and Houston (now deceased) joined forces with an educator and a medical writer in a text made even more accessible for the average reader while retaining the depth of material of particular use to the medical community. This edition of this seminal text added chapters on vision and the eye at altitude, chronic and subacute altitude illness, and the limits to work at altitude (with implications for athletic training). It presents information on genetics and gender differences and more on flight and space travel, on understanding and treating sea-level hypoxic illnesses, and on who can (or should not) go to high altitude, and much more. With an expanded glossary of terms.

What's Keeping Your Prayers from Being Effective? Learning how to pray is one of the greatest challenges in a Christian's life. A.W. Tozer pointed out that the Church's greatest curse is unanswered prayer, and that many people do not seem bothered by that. Maybe they don't understand what answered prayer is all about. Tozer outlines this as only he can, describing the kind of prayer God answers and the kind of prayer that leaves Him silent. Ultimately, you have to ask yourself: are my prayers today more powerful and effective than they were a year ago? Our good Father wants them to be! The book opens with Jacob's Ladder and its theme of ascending into God's very presence. What better place to begin dialoging with God? Only He can teach us what is on His heart, what His will is, and what our part in it could be.
A Step 3 biography of esteemed lawyer and former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama! Michelle Obama is a lot like YOU! She grew up on the South Side of Chicago with her brother, Craig. She rode her bike and played freeze tag with her friends. And she and her family ate dinner together every night! That work ethic has propelled her through her whole life—through her magnet high school, her college years at Princeton, and Harvard Law School. Her parents also taught her to reach back and help others once she found success, evidence of which is everywhere in her work as First Lady of the United States and beyond. Step 3 Readers feature engaging characters in easy-to-follow plots about popular topics—for children who are ready to read on their own.
In this intimate book of inspiration, Tyler Perry writes of how his faith has sustained him in hard times, centered him in good times, and enriched his life. Higher Is Waiting is a spiritual guidebook, a collection of teachings culled from the experiences of a lifetime, meant to inspire readers to climb higher in their own lives and pull themselves up to a better, more fulfilling place. Beginning with his earliest memories of growing up a shy boy in New Orleans, Perry recalls the moments of grace and beauty in a childhood marked by brutality, deprivation, and fear. With tenderness he sketches portraits of the people who sustained him and taught him indelible lessons about integrity, trust in God, and the power of forgiveness: his aunt Mae, who cared for her grandfather, who was born a slave, and sewed quilts that told a story of generations; Mr. Butler, a blind man of remarkable dignity and elegance, who sold penny candies on a street corner; and his beloved mother, Maxine, who endured abuse, financial hardship, and the daily injustices of growing up in the Jim Crow South yet whose fierce love for her son burned bright and never dimmed. Perry writes of how he nurtured his dreams and discovered solace in nature, and of his resolute determination to reach ever higher. Perry vividly and movingly describes his growing awareness of God’s presence in his life, how he learned to tune in to His voice, to persevere through hard times, and to choose faith over fear. Here he is: the devoted son, the loving father, the steadfast friend, the naturalist, the philanthropist, the creative spirit—a man whose life lessons and insights into scripture are a gift offered with generosity, humility, and love.
Among these nine new stories by "the resident Weird Mind of his generation" ("Washington Post Book World") are such diverse gems as "Occam's Ducks", "Flatfeet!", "The Sawing Boys", and "El Castillo de la Perseverancia".

Dinah Mullans loved to sing, and her mother, who was also a singer in her early years, wanted to see her dream come true in her daughter. The family hired a vocal coach who, even though he was a qualified and a professional coach, lusted after beautiful girls who were coached by him. This was not publicly known, and unaware of this, Dinahs family trusted him with Dinah. When the ordeal of sexual harassment began with Dinah, she was afraid to let her parents know. Her only confidant was a diary her mother gave her when she started her coaching lessons. At her final debut, when she had turned eighteen years old, her coach disguised himself as a woman and raped her in the ladies room of the concert hall. Dinah suffered from two traumatic experiencesbeing raped by her coach and unable to tell her family. Because of the trauma, she was sent to a home to recover, where she attempted suicide. After much care and counseling and with the help of a friend, she overcame the trauma and revealed her long-kept secret. This brought her justice as her vocal coach was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. After losing his mind, he committed suicide. Ten years later, Dinah was back on stage, singing even better than she had ever been and fulfilled the dream her mother wanted to see come true.
