The original township of Gilmanton was incorporated in 1727. The town of Gilford was set off and incorporated 16 June 1812 and another portion of Gilmanton was annexed to Gilford 5 July 1851. The present-day Gilmanton was set off 28 June 1859 and the remaining portion of the town was called Upper Gilmanton until 24 June 1869 when the name was changed to Belmont.
