A vivid portrait of African American life in today’s urban South that uses food to explore the complex interactions of race and class Getting Something to Eat in Jackson uses food—what people eat and how—to explore the interaction of race and class in the lives of African Americans in the contemporary urban South. Joseph Ewoodzie Jr. examines how “foodways”—food availability, choice, and consumption—vary greatly between classes of African Americans in Jackson, Mississippi, and how this reflects and shapes their very different experiences of a shared racial identity. Ewoodzie spent more than a year following a group of socioeconomically diverse African Americans—from upper-middle-class patrons of the city’s fine-dining restaurants to men experiencing homelessness who must organize their days around the schedules of soup kitchens. Ewoodzie goes food shopping, cooks, and eats with a young mother living in poverty and a grandmother working two jobs. He works in a Black-owned BBQ restaurant, and he meets a man who decides to become a vegan for health reasons but who must drive across town to get tofu and quinoa. Ewoodzie also learns about how soul food is changing and why it is no longer a staple survival food. Throughout, he shows how food choices influence, and are influenced by, the racial and class identities of Black Jacksonians. By tracing these contemporary African American foodways, Getting Something to Eat in Jackson offers new insights into the lives of Black Southerners and helps challenge the persistent homogenization of blackness in American life.

So P.I. Jackson Douglas knows reclaiming it for Alec's daughter Abby won't be easy. But should it really be this hard? However, nobody causes Jackson and Abby as much trouble as the mystery woman who joins the hunt with them. Pursuit of the Bible takes them from an opulent downtown L.A. hotel to an art gala on Santa Catalina Island, and from a game of cat-and-mouse aboard Amtrak's Coast Starlight to a snow-covered mountain hideaway. If Jackson is to procure the Bible for Abby, he'll need to stay one step ahead of the entire gang-not to mention stay alive long enough to figure out how to pull it off.
Author Theron Hopkins travels from sweltering summer practices to heated crosstown rivalry matchups to one of the biggest games in the country, the Texas 5A state title game, held in San Antonio’s Alamodome, witnessing thrilling wins and devastating losses along the way. Hitting twenty towns in twenty weeks, this story showcases a cross section of America seen through football, from Great Falls, Montana, where the coach borrows five hundred dollars in his own name to purchase weight-training equipment for his team, and builds them up to championship caliber; to Waldport, Oregon, where the varsity squad is just fourteen boys strong and gearing up to take on one of the toughest teams in the conference; to Massillon, Ohio, where high school football is so important that the president of the booster club puts a tiny orange football into every baby boy’s crib in the hospital. But the author also finds that the wins or losses on Friday nights are only part—and maybe not even the best part—of what makes the game so irresistible and so important to all those people who watch it, coach it, and play it. Night after night, all across America, the story uncovers the true heart and soul of high school football. Nightmares Through the Eyes of the Beast I heard someone coming down the stairs. I heard her call my name. Dont worry Tommy; Ill get you out of there. I could see her, as she walked up to the bars to open the door. But it wasnt me; it was the beast in there waiting for her. She opened the door, and walked into the cage. Come on Tommy lets go; she said as she held out her hand. The beast reached out, and grabbed her hand. I could feel the fear; I could taste the fear; it was tremendous, it was greater than any fear of any animal that I had ever felt, and the beast liked it too, I could tell. Andys tree It was one year to the day that he died. I was there, putting flowers by the tree. When the ground started to move. The tree lifted itself out of the ground, and started walking. I followed it through the woods into town. It was going to Mr. Johnsons store. It stopped in back and waited. Second Coming Help! Help! Stop him, hes stealing blood. a man, yelled as he came running down the hall. Running after the man that we had seen leaving, I tried to catch him. He looked back at me and smiled, poof he was gone. He ran so fast that I couldnt see him. How could he run that fast? Returning to the funeral home I discovered that the blood was my fathers. Why would someone want blood? What are they vampires? Past I drove up to a four way stop that led to Northfield. I applied my brakes and came to a stop and then something weird happened. I found myself not in my car; I was setting on a horse with four other men sitting beside me, also on horses. We were sitting at the crossroads of a dirt road. I was stunned and overwhelmed, it seemed so real. We were wearing long gray coats. We sat there staring down the road, and then they started to ride off. I just sat there, I had never been on a horse, I didnt think I knew how to ride one. Come on Frank get your head out of your ass, we got to go, one of the men yelled at me. Beep! Beep! The sound of a horn brought me back to reality. I found myself still sitting in my car. I hadnt gone anywhere. Look for Nightmares book 2 com
