This paper is one of a series which has three main aims: to serve as a reminder of the extent to which geochemical reconnaissance data are available for various parts of the country; to make general comments upon the relationship between the observed surficial geochemistry and the general and economic geology of various regions; and to provide specific examples showing how these geochemical data may be interpreted. Although the prime purpose of the geochemical surveys is as a guide to mineral exploration, the same data are of value to environmentalists, and in populated areas to agriculturists and health authorities.
The Nanisivik deposits are Mississippi Valley-type Zn-Pb-Ag massive sulphide bodies hosted by Mesoproterozoic dolostone of the Society Cliffs Formation. This work, undertaken during the summer of 2001, included detailed mapping in the immediate vicinity of the Nanisivik mine, regional mapping, and examination of accessible sulphide showings, and was undertaken to characterize the stratigraphy and develop a regional model for the mineralization. This project bridges the gap between deposit-specific and regional studies. In addition to generating new concepts, this paper integrates previous work into a coherent model explaining the genesis and distribution of massive sulphide bodies in the Nanisivik area.
This publication consists of papers delivered at an International Symposium of the International Association of Sedimentologists held at Beijing, Peoples' Republic of China in August, 1988. The theme of the symposium was sedimentology related to mineral deposits and incorporated meetings of three International Geological Correlation Programmes (IGCP) Projects; IGCP 219 on Comparative Lacustrine Sedimentology in Space and Time, IGCP 226 on Manganese Deposits, and IGCP 254 on Metalliferous Black Shales. This book is intended for earth scientists and advanced students studying/working in the areas of sedimentology, petroleum geology, ore geology and economic geology.
Voyageurs National Park (VOYA) in northern Minnesota contains significant aquatic resources including 30 lakes and numerous wetlands. This synthesis contains an integrated account of what is known about the aquatic resources of VOYA; compares VOYA resources to those of other areas; and identifies opportunities and needs for future studies and surveys. Surveys and studies in VOYA have identified fifty-four fish species from 16 families 820 vascular plant species and 7 amphibian and 3 reptile species (higher numbers probably occur). Estimates of relative abundance for phyto- and zooplankton vary among VOYA lakes and depths surveyed. The VOYA fish populations and communities have been the most intensively studied. Twenty-eight percent of VOYA wetlands are the result of beaver activity. Mercury contamination and its food-chain bioaccumulation in VOYA are of particular concern. An integrated monitoring plan is needed in VOYA to provide continuous data and information on the complex physical chemical, and biological factors that influence aquatic systems. Resource managers in VOYA will use this information to understand and explain observed changes and to predict the potential for future changes.
