This paper reports the results of remapping the Mountain Grove pluton, situated in the Sharbot Lake domain in the central part of the Central Metasedimentary Belt, Grenville Province, Ontario. The pluton, previously mapped as a single body of gabbroic rock, is now described as comprising two distinct intrusions. The paper begins with an overview of its geologic setting, then describes the lithology of the two intrusion units, associated dykes, and neighbouring intrusions & plutons. The geochronology of the pluton and its mineral deposits are also briefly noted.
Presents geochronological age determinations of zircons from eight plutons in the Grenville Province, Ontario (Oso and Mountain Grove plutons in the Sharbot Lake domain; Silver Lake & Bennett Bay plutons and Fall River mangeritic augen gneiss associated with the Maberly shear zone; North Crosby & Pike Lake plutons in the north-west sheared part of the Frontenac terrane; and the Beales Mills pluton in the interior of the Frontenac terrane). The results are used to propose a re-interpretation of the tectonics of the Frontenac suite and the origin of the magmas responsible.
Presents a geochronological and geochemical study of the Barbers Lake and McLean plutons in the Grenville Province of Ontario, including comparisons of whole-rock analyses of these plutons with the Elphin and Leggat Lake plutons. The assignment of various plutons in the study area to one of several age groups is discussed.
The purpose of this paper is to document results of the electrical resistivity characteristics of rocks from the Astarte River Formation, central Baffin Island, for use in interpreting ground electromagnetic surveys that have been conducted in the central Baffin region. Results are presented for five black graphitic shale samples subjected to three-dimensional electrical resistivity measurements & subsequent data analysis. The samples were selected to characterize the resistivity of the Formation and to determine the effect of strong foliation containing porous layers & of disseminated sulphide mineralization oriented parallel to foliation.
This paper reports results from magnetotelluric measurements made along an approximately 300-kilometre northwest-southeast trending profile that crossed the major geological structures of central Baffin Island. The main goal of this survey was to determine the sub-surface geometry of major geological boundaries, particularly between Archean Rae Craton rocks and overlying Paleoproterozoic continental-margin units. The paper describes data acquisition methods & problems encountered and presents a preliminary model that describes much of the magnetotelluric response observed along the profile.
