Excerpt from Structure of Metamorphic Rocks at Mineral King, California Bedding in the less competent rocks has been transposed into lenticular lithologic layering, or foliation, by slip on cleavage. The foliated rocks are inferred to have deformed by a process akin to laminar slip on cleavage with strike-slip movements perpendicular to the vertical axis of cleavage intersections. As a consequence of the transposition of bedding, major folds formed by bedding tend to be obscured, or even obliterated, and a superficially homoclinal sequence of bedded and foliated rocks is produced. Pervasive disharmonic folding on all scales interrupts regular repetition of units by folding and thereby further obscures major fold patterns.
