This Handbook describes an implementation process for core training as recommended in Implementation Guide G441.12A, Radiation Safety Training, and as outlined in the DOE Radiological Control Standard [RCS - DOE-STD-1098-99]. The Handbook is meant to assist those individuals within the Department of Energy, Managing and Operating contractors, and Managing and Integrating contractors identified as having responsibility for implementing core training recommended by the RCS. This training is intended for general employees to assist in meeting their job-specific training requirements of 10 CFR 835. While this Handbook addresses many requirements of 10 CFR 835 Subpart J, it must be supplemented with facility-specific information to achieve full compliance.
This text is written in plain language. It is used to train radiation workers such that they will have the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to minimize their exposures to ionizing radiation while working in a general laboratory environment. The text is used by academic institutions and by consultants to train radiation workers. The text is intended for workers who use radiation sources (radioactive material and x-ray systems) as a part of their routine task but is not progressing toward a degree in health physics (professional in radiation safety). The intended audiences are commonly found in medical research, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, university, veterinarian, and other laboratory environments as well as to emergency responders and should meet the DOE General Employee Radiological Training (GERT) requirements. The text supports a 40-hour course in radiation safety. Other training materials that support this text can be found at the same website: http://www.pickeringenterprises.org.
