Proceedings of the GBEN 2006 Conference: Global Built Environment: Towards an Integrated Approach for Sustainability. Hosted by the Department of Built Environment, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK. Organised jointly by the University of Central Lancashire, Edgehill University and National University of Ireland, Cork. Conference dates: 11-12 September 2006.
Unequal distribution of wealth, poverty, pollution, and gender inequality are just a few of the problems we face and struggle to eliminate. Sustainable development offers a long-term holistic solution to these problems through meeting the needs of the current generation without endangering the capability of future generations in meeting their own needs. Sustainable education or education for sustainability is a transformative learning paradigm that prepares learners and provides them with knowledge, ethical awareness, skills, values, and attitudes to achieve sustainable goals. Global Approaches to Sustainability Through Learning and Education is a comprehensive academic publication that facilitates a greater understanding of sustainable development and fosters a culture of sustainability through learning and education. Highlighting a range of topics such as ethics, game-based learning, and knowledge management, this book is ideal for teachers, environmentalists, higher education faculty, activists, curriculum developers, academicians, researchers, professionals, administrators, and policymakers.
As the world’s population continues to expand, maintaining and indeed increasing agricultural productivity is more important than ever, though it is also more difficult than ever in the face of changing weather patterns that in some cases are leading to aridity and desertification. The absence of scientific soil inventories, especially in arid areas, leads to mistaken decisions about soil use that, in the end, reduce a region’s capacity to feed its population, or to guarantee a clean water supply. Greater efficiency in soil use is possible when these resources are properly classified using international standards. Focusing on arid regions, this volume details soil classification from many countries. It is only once this information is properly assimilated by policymakers it becomes a foundation for informed decisions in land use planning for rational and sustainable uses.
"This book provides perspectives on the convergence of ubiquitous computing, intelligent systems research, and context awareness with the aim of encouraging the further development of ambient intelligence frameworks and research"--
This book highlights recent findings in civil and environmental engineering and urban planning, and provides an overview of the state of the art in these fields, mainly in Russia and Eastern Europe. A broad range of topics and issues in modern engineering are discussed, including construction, buildings and structures, advanced materials, innovative technology, methods and techniques in civil engineering, heating, gas supply, water supply and sewerage, foundation engineering, BIM, structural reliability, durability and monitoring, special and unique structures construction (bridge, tunnel, road, railway engineering), design and construction of hydraulic structures, concrete engineering, urban regeneration and sustainable development, urban transport system, engineering structure safety and disaster prevention, water resources engineering, water and wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse of wastewater, etc. The volume gathers selected papers from the 6th International Conference on Construction, Architecture and Technosphere Safety (ICCATS), held in Sochi, Russia in September 2022. The authors are experts in various fields of engineering, and all papers have been carefully reviewed.
The year 2007 could perhaps accurately be described as the year when climate change finally received the attention that this challenge deserves globally. Much of the information and knowledge that was created in this field during the year was the result of the findings of the Fourth - sessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which were disseminated on a large scale and reported extensively by the media. This was the result not only of a heightened interest on the part of the public on various aspects of climate change, but also because the IPCC itself proactively attempted to spread the findings of its AR4 to the public at large. The interest generated on the scientific realities of climate change was further enhanced by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the IPCC and former Vice President of the US, Al Gore. By taking this decision in favour of a leader who has done a great deal to create awareness on c- mate change, and a body that assesses all scientific aspects of climate change and disseminates the result of its findings, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has clearly drawn the link between climate change and peace in the world.
This book highlights the latest knowledge and innovations in the fields of civil engineering and construction industry striving for a sustainable built environment. This book consists of high-quality innovative research findings selected from the proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE 2023) under the themes of Sustainable construction, urban green infrastructure and planning, rainwater harvesting and water conservation, high-performance concrete, indoor environmental quality and indoor plants, wind and hydro-power energy, waste and wastewater management for enhanced sustainability, impacts of climate change, carbon footprint, global climate model and landscaping, material flows and industrial ecology, sustainable materials, etc.
