This compilation of several research papers is an important material for those who wish to conduct papers about the English language and literature. The volume contains ten papers about discussions on speech and articulations, phonetics, English language roles in the linguistic landscapes, as well as some Asian fiction and gay language. I have been particularly fortunate to produce and present these papers internationally because of the grants given to me by several offices and institutions. This is my way of sharing these blessings I have received with my students who in turn will be writing their research papers.
Talk Is Cheap begins with this telling observation and proceeds to argue that such "unplain speaking" is fundamentally embedded in the way we now talk. John Haiman traces this sea-change in our language usage to the emergence of a postmodern "divided self" who is hyper-conscious that what he or she is saying has been said before. Thus, "cheap talk" helps us distance ourselves from a social role with which we are uncomfortable. Haiman examines the full range of these pervasive distancing mechanisms, from cliches and quotation marks to camp and parody. Also, he highlights ways in which language is evolving (and has evolved) from non-linguistic behavior. His book shows us how what we are saying is continually separating itself from how we say it.
This study, situated within the field of Language and Sexuality Studies, investigates the characterisation of fictional gay men in 21st-century British drama. The research is based on a corpus of 61 plays, staged between 2000 and 2020, which collectively feature 187 gay male characters. The study employs methodological triangulation to explore the corpus from three distinct perspectives, moving from broad trends to more detailed analyses. The first section offers an overview of 20th and 21st-century British drama featuring gay characters, identifying general trends in the portrayal of homosexuality in contemporary British theatre. The second section delves into the 187 fictional gay characters, classifying them according to both sociolinguistic variables (such as age, social class, and linguistic variety) and variables specific to Language and Sexuality Studies (including levels of openness about their sexuality and their distinctive use of “gayspeak”). The final section takes an eclectic approach, providing a multifaceted analysis of the “gayspeak” observed in the corpus. This is done through both manual analysis and a corpus-assisted approach using #Lancsbox software. The primary goal of this section is to evaluate whether the features of “gayspeak” identified in earlier studies persist in the contemporary plays under examination.
