During the past decade we have witnessed a revolution in analytical methods. The development of vapor phase chromatography for the separation and analysis of classes of substances ranging from metals and gases to a wide variety of organic materials has been one of the most exciting of these new techniques. Gas-liquid chromatography for the measurement of steroids is particularly significant for endocrinologists and reports during the past several years have demonstrated its usefulness. Because of the growing interest in this method, a committee of the Endocrinology Study Section composed of Drs. R. M. Dodson, Seymour Lieberman, Hilton A. Salhanick, and Ralph E. Peterson, felt that the time was propitious to hold this Workshop and it is on their behalf that I welcome you. We hope to obtain enough data during these sessions so that those attending this conference and those who may read the proceedings will be able to make an informed judgement about the usefulness of gas-liquid chromatography for the analysis of steroids in biological fluids. Thus, I hope that there will be adequate documentation of the reliability of the methods as well as a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of this analytical method with other classical methods. If we can do this, this Workshop will provide a significant base of practical considerations about gas chromatographic analytic techniques. I would like to thank Drs. T. F. Gallagher, H. Wilson, H. Salhanick and L. Engel for agreeing to serve as Chairmen of the sessions.
This manual deals specifically with laboratory approaches to diagnosing inborn errors of metabolism. The key feature is that each chapter is sufficiently detailed so that any individual can adopt the described method into their own respective laboratory.
This comprehensive and unique handbook of split and splitless injection techniques has been completely revised and updated. This new edition offers: - New insights concerning sample evaporation in the injector - Information about matrix effects - A new chapter on injector design The real processes within the injector are for the first time visualized and explained by the CD-ROM included in the book. Furthermore the reader will understand the concepts of injection techniques and get a knowledge of the sources of error. The handbook also includes many practical guidelines. From reviews of former editions: "This substantial book is on injection techniques alone, which ... demonstrates this can have many pitfalls ... no one should be allowed to direct a laboratory doing quantitative analysis by GC without first being thoroughly familar with this book ..." The Analyst "This is a detailed reference volume filled with practical suggestions and techniques for managing split and splitless injection in the day-to-day world of the working gas chromatographer. It will be useful ... for anyone who must work hands-on with GC." Journal of High Resolution Chromatography
As mass spectrometric methods now offer a level of specificity and sensitivity unrealized by spectrophotometric- and immunoassay-based methods, mass spectrometry has entered the clinical laboratory where it is being used for a wide range of applications. In Clinical Applications of Mass Spectrometry: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers provide detailed step-by-step procedures for the analysis of number of analytes of clinical importance. This versatile and expansive volume covers mass spectrometry methods for analytes including a variety of drugs, hormones, and metabolic compounds spanning the disciplines of toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, endocrinology, and pediatric metabolism. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include brief introductions to the analytes, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, readily reproducible analytical protocols, and detailed notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive and dependable, Clinical Applications of Mass Spectrometry: Methods and Protocols offers its readers a wide array of valuable methods for experienced mass spectrometric labs that are looking to introduce new analyses as well as for those laboratories currently considering the addition of this resourceful and vital technology.
Chromatography of Steroids
Steroids in the Laboratory and Clinical Practice covers both basic chemistry and therapeutic application of steroids in a single source. The comprehensive reference addresses the specificity of steroid determinations to clarify confusion arising from the laboratory results. The book covers important advancements in the field and is a valuable addition in the literature addressing all existing knowledge gaps. This is a must have reference for pathologists, laboratorians, endocrinologists, analytical/clinical chemists and biochemists. - Addresses the normal production of steroids and concentrations found in biological fluids and tissues - Presents the changes in steroid concentrations at life events as reference points for clinical investigations - Reviews the genetic disorders of steroids in relation to specific enzyme changes and clinical presentation
This book is written by experts who, using the latest techniques, describe laboratory investigations into women from conception to the grave. We asked the authors tp pay particular attention to the interpretation of laboratory results so we hope the book will be of interest to clinicians as well as to medical scientists.
