Fuzzy hardware developments have been a major force driving the applications of fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic in both science and engineering. Fuzzy logic is enjoying an unprecedented popularity – and for excellent reasons. It has moved successfully beyond the technological and engineering fields into areas as diverse as consumer and electronic products and systems, the stock market, and medical diagnostics.
Intelligent systems are now being used more commonly than in the past. These involve cognitive, evolving and artificial-life, robotic, and decision making systems, to name a few. Due to the tremendous speed of development, on both fundamental and technological levels, it is virtually impossible to offer an up-to-date, yet comprehensive overview of this field. Nevertheless, the need for a volume presenting recent developments and trends in this domain is huge, and the demand for such a volume is continually increasing in industrial and academic engineering 1 communities. Although there are a few volumes devoted to similar issues , none offer a comprehensive coverage of the field; moreover they risk rapidly becoming obsolete. The editors of this volume cannot pretend to fill such a large gap. However, it is the editors' intention to fill a significant part of this gap. A comprehensive coverage of the field should include topics such as neural networks, fuzzy systems, neuro-fuzzy systems, genetic algorithms, evolvable hardware, cellular automata-based systems, and various types of artificial life-system implementations, including autonomous robots. In this volume, we have focused on the first five topics listed above. The volume is composed of four parts, each part being divided into chapters, with the exception of part 4. In Part 1, the topics of "Evolvable Hardware and GAs" are addressed. In Chapter 1, "Automated Design Synthesis and Partitioning for Adaptive Reconfigurable Hardware", Ranga Vemuri and co-authors present state-of-the-art adaptive architectures, their classification, and their applications.
The idea of evolving machines, whose origins can be traced to the cybernetics movementofthe1940sand1950s,hasrecentlyresurgedintheformofthenascent ?eld of bio-inspired systems and evolvable hardware. The inaugural workshop, Towards Evolvable Hardware, took place in Lausanne in October 1995, followed by the First International Conference on Evolvable Systems: From Biology to Hardware (ICES), held in Tsukuba, Japan in October 1996. The second ICES conference was held in Lausanne in September 1998, with the third and fourth being held in Edinburgh, April 2000 and Tokyo, October 2001 respectively. This has become the leading conference in the ?eld of evolvable systems and the 2003 conference promised to be at least as good as, if not better than, the four that preceeded it. The ?fth international conference was built on the success of its predec- sors, aiming at presenting the latest developments in the ?eld. In addition, it brought together researchers who use biologically inspired concepts to imp- ment real systems in arti?cial intelligence, arti?cial life, robotics, VLSI design and related domains. We would say that this ?fth conference followed on from the previous four in that it consisted of a number of high-quality interesting thought-provoking papers.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, MICAI 2007, held in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in November 2007. The 116 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in sections on topics that include computational intelligence, neural networks, knowledge representation and reasoning, agents and multiagent systems.
The collection of contributions in this volume contains the unconventional mode of computing and presents the new notions and new theories based upon the most natural human reasoning, cognition and perception. The Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (MICAI), a yearly international conference series organized by the Mexican Society for Artificial Intel- gence (SMIA), is a major international AI forum and the main event in the academic life of the country’s growing AI community. In 2008 Mexico celebrates the 50th an- versary of development of computer science in the country: in 1958 the first computer was installed at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Nowadays, computer science is the country’s fastest growing research area. The proceedings of the previous MICAI events were published by Springer in its Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series, vol. 1793, 2313, 2972, 3789, 4293, and 4827. Since its foundation in 2000, the conference has been growing in popularity, and improving in quality. This volume contains the papers presented at the oral session of the 7th Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, MICAI 2008, held October 27–31, 2008, in Atizapán de Zaragoza, Mexico. The conference received for evaluation 363 submissions by 1,032 authors from 43 countries (see Tables 1 and 2). This volume contains revised versions of 94 papers by 308 authors from 28 countries selected - cording to the results of an international reviewing process. Thus the acceptance rate was 25.9%.
