Advances in Soft Computing contains the most recent developments in the field of soft computing in engineering design and manufacture. The book comprises a selection of papers that were first presented in June 1998 at the 3rd On-line World Conference on Soft Computing in Engineering Design and Manufacturing. Amongst these are four invited papers by World-renowned researchers in the field. Soft computing is a collection of methodologies which aim to exploit tolerance for imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth to achieve tractability, robustness and low solution cost. The area of applications of soft computing is extensive. Principally the constituents of soft computing are: fuzzy computing, neuro-computing, genetic computing and probabilistic computing. The topics in this book are well focused on engineering design an d manufacturing. This broad collection of 43 research papers, has been arranged into nine parts by the editors. These include: Design Support Systems, Intelligent Control, Data Mining and New Topics in EA basics. The papers on evolutionary design and optimisation are of particular interest. Innovative techniques are explored and the reader is introduced to new, highly advanced research results. The editors present a unique collection of papers that provide a comprehensive overview of current developments in soft computing research around the world.

The manufacture of foods and beverages is a highly competitive, interna tionalindustry, and the range ofproducts is becomingincreasingly diverse. Manufacturers are required to produce quality foods with the highest possible efficiency and lowest possible cost, and international legislation is imposingstrict controls on food safety. Process control is the essential link between quality, safety and cost. Radical changes in the technology of manufacturing bring with them new requirements for monitoring (and ultimately controlling) increasingly complex parameters. The aim of this book is to review the latest developments in monitoring systems, particu larly those suitable for the rapid sensing of composition, structure or microbial status. The emphasis is on 'up and coming' methods that have been proven in the laboratory or in other industrial environments, and offer potential in the food sector. As such, it is hoped that this book will increase the general awareness ofwhat new systems have to offer, and will act as a catalyst in the technology transfer process. The book features chapters on automated machine vision, fluorescence cytometry, infrared spectroscopy, light scattering spectroscopy, ultra sound, mass spectrometry, and chemical and biological sensors. In all cases, the basic approach is to describe the underlying principles, and then to consider the implementation of a particular technique. Examples are given of the practical application to specific problems in the food industry.
This book addresses the frontier advances in the theory and application of nature-inspired optimization techniques, including solving the quadratic assignment problem, prediction in nature-inspired dynamic optimization, the lion algorithm and its applications, optimizing the operation scheduling of microgrids, PID controllers for two-legged robots, optimizing crane operating times, planning electrical energy distribution systems, automatic design and evaluation of classification pipelines, and optimizing wind-energy power generation plants. The book also presents a variety of nature-inspired methods and illustrates methods of adapting these to said applications. Nature-inspired computation, developed by mimicking natural phenomena, makes a significant contribution toward the solution of non-convex optimization problems that normal mathematical optimizers fail to solve. As such, a wide range of nature-inspired computing approaches has been used in multidisciplinary engineering applications. Written by researchers and developers from a variety of fields, this book presents the latest findings, novel techniques and pioneering applications.
