In the midst of oppression, poverty, violence, and insufficiency where survival takes priority over salvation, what theology speaks to this condition? Black Theology and Holy Hip-hop are important to understand and promote, especially in their relationship to inner-city ministry and spiritual development, primarily in regards to black and brown youth. This work investigates the complex crises experienced among our black and brown youth, with special focus on the inner-city. Black Theology and Holy Hip-hop is less about people and more about institutions--the dichotomy between the institution of the church and the social institution of music that affects young people's mindset. This book will examine how a double-edged sword of Black Theology and Holy Hip-hop will cut a new faith in inner-city ministry that will initiate freedom against personal pain and systemic oppression, on the one hand, and free minds from self-hate and submissive control on the other.
Wounds of History takes a new view in psychoanalysis using a trans-generational and social/political/cultural model looking at trauma and its transmission. The view is radical in looking beyond maternal dyads and Oedipal triangles and in its portrayal of a multi-generational world that is no longer hierarchical. This look allows for greater clinical creativity for conceptualizing and treating human suffering, situating healing in expanding circles of witnessing. The contributors to this volume look at inherited personal trauma involving legacies of war, genocide, slavery, political persecution, forced migration/unwelcomed immigration and the way attachment and connection is disrupted, traumatized and ultimately longing for repair and reconnection. The book addresses several themes such as the ethical/social turn in psychoanalysis; the repetition of resilience and wounds and the repair of these wounds; the complexity of attachment in the aftermath of trauma, and the move towards social justice. In their contributions, the authors remain close to the human stories. Wounds of History will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychologists and other mental health professionals, as well as students or teachers of trauma studies, Jewish and gender studies and studies of genocide.
African Americans, its past time to wake up. The three-hundred-year curse has been broken. The door to the cell that has held you hostage is unlocked. Even though the door is still closed, its not locked! It is time to push the door open and step out to your freedom. It requires an effort. It will not be opened for you. It is past time for you to love yourself and your heritage and no longer allow yourself to be denied whatever your hearts desire. Learn your history. Learn it for yourself. Then teach it to your children and their children. Let the truth be told from generations to generations to all, just like our ancestors passed the legends down from generations to generations. Know that our ancestors were the origin of creation/civilization here in this earth realm. Know that our heritage and history were stripped from us by design. We all have suffered from post-traumatic slave syndrome that was pasted down from our slave ancestors; understand that no one escaped from it. The curse of slavery has had a boomerang effect on whites and other cultures all over the world called racism. Its past time to understand why we do the things we do. We need to break the consistency that is not a benefit to our lives and the future generations to come. Understand we, as a people, were divided by design. Its time for our people to unite. Understand that it is only through uniting the African Americans here in these United States today that we can cause a change that will affect people of color all over the world, including the motherland Africa. It is the vices of racism, hatred, lies, and deception that keep the world in bondage. Understand that there has been a shift from ole-school slavery to modern-day slavery. Our objective is to recognize it and no longer allow it to enslave us. Freedom starts with freeing the psyche first. Allow truth to set your mind free.
On October 16, 1995, a million black men- sons and brothers, husbands and fathers- made a commitment to ourselves that we would not shirk our duties as fathers to our children, loving husbands to our wives, and for a serious examination of our place in the world. It was on this day, in a speech by Minister Farrakhan, that I first heard about Willie Lynch. There was something about that part of his message that stuck with me for the past ten years. Scholars would say that it is too simplistic to attribute our failings to one person- one plan- one scheme, Willie Lynch. We are not that naïve, are we? And, anyway, if true, his effort at social engineering took place 300 years ago. In this book, I will attempt to explain, in broad terms, the negative results of that social engineering project of Willie Lynch. I will also make recommendations designed to combat it. I want to tell my readers how the cornerstone of black society, the family, has been eroded to the point of despair; the mindset that caused it, and some possible basic solutions. The educational system should be the easiest to fix. We must stop putting kids in bad learning situations, and leaving them to fail. We have choices and we must exercise those choices. The economic wealth of African Americans is larger than most countries in the world today. Yet we fail to benefit from that wealth. We are Bling-Bling Broke. We are the second largest voting block in the country, yet we have marginalized ourselves by voting for anyone who will promise us civil rights (The Democrats). They don’t deliver, yet we continue to vote the same way each election. To this day, the media will rarely portray Blacks in a positive way. The media has proven to be the most effective instrument of the Willie Lynch social engineering experiment. From the days of slavery the church played a vital role in the rebuilding of the moral foundation necessary for this society to grow strong and correct. The Willie Lynch legacy is the one consistent thread that seems to affect all of us. In 2006 we still occasionally exhibit social behavior reminiscent of the Willie Lynch legacy.
Fragments of Trauma and the Social Production of Suffering: Trauma, History, and Memory offers a kaleidoscope of perspectives that highlight the problem of traumatic memory. Because trauma fragments memory, storytelling is impeded by what is unknowable and what is unspeakable. Each of the contributors tackles the problem of narrativizing memory that is constructed from fragments that have been passed along the generations. When trauma is cultural as well as personal, it becomes even more invisible, as each generation’s attempts at coping push the pain further below the surface. Consequently, that pain becomes increasingly ineffable, haunting succeeding generations. In each story the contributors offer, there emerges the theme of difference, a difference that turns back on itself and makes an accusation. Themes of knowing and unknowing show the terrible toll that trauma takes when there is no one with whom the trauma can be acknowledged and worked through. In the face of utter lack of recognition, what might be known together becomes hidden. Our failure to speak to these unaspirated truths becomes a betrayal of self and also of others. In the case of intergenerational and cultural trauma, we betray not only our ancestors but also the future generations to come. In the face of unacknowledged trauma, this book reveals that we are confronted with the perennial choice of speaking or becoming complicit in our silence.
