From a New England Woman'S Diary in Dixie in 1865 by Mary Ames, first published in 1906, is a rare manuscript, the original residing in one of the great libraries of the world. When thousands of African Americans freed themselves from slavery during the American Civil War and launched the larger process of emancipation, hundreds of northern antislavery reformers traveled to the federally occupied South to assist them.
