Since the revival of maggot therapy in Western wound care approximately thirty years ago, there has been no comprehensive synthesis of what is known about its clinical practice, supply chain management, and social dimensions. This edited volume fills the information vacuum and, importantly, makes the current state of knowledge freely accessible. It is the first to provide sound, evidence-based information and guidance covering the entire supply chain from production to treatment. The chapters are arranged in five parts presenting the latest on clinical practice, the principles of therapeutic action, medicinal maggot production, distribution logistics, and the ethical dimensions of maggot therapy. The contributors have paid particular attention to the challenges encountered in compromised, low-resource healthcare settings such as disasters, conflict, and poverty. There are still many barriers to the widespread uptake of maggot therapy in healthcare settings. This book will be essential reading for a global audience of doctors, nurses, allied healthcare providers, students, and entrepreneurs with an interest in maggot-assisted wound care. It will be the go-to reference for those who plan, regulate, and coordinate healthcare, and want to establish a maggot therapy program, particularly in low- and middle-income and other compromised healthcare settings where maggot therapy can provide much-needed, affordable, and efficacious wound care.
Animal Farm meets The Simpsons in this inventive twist on the hard-boiled detective novel, featuring a world made up exclusively of cats, dogs, and one ruthless fox... Bull terrier Crusher McNash is a no-nonsense homicide detective who eats out of the can and only bathes when his boss orders him to. He’s just been thrownaboneaboutagruesome case involving Rottweilers torn apart by a savage killer, and the only lead he’s been able to sniff out is “an impression of movement” at the murder scene. Crusher suspects the killer is a cat, and there’s nothing he hates more than “the whole cream-lapping, wool-juggling, pajama-wearing, fence-sitting, bird-torturing, furball-coughing lot of them.” But he’ll have to start barking up a different tree if he wants help solving this case as his partner on this case is soymilk-drinking, pressed-suit- wearing Cassius Lap, an agent for the FBI (Feline Bureau of Investigation). As this odd couple puts their paws together, their investiga- tion takes them from the bow- els of the Kennel into the tony streets of Kathattan. Soon, they begin to uncover a vast con- spiracy involving a cat who has been trained as a super-killer, capable of growing in size and ferocity and killing any dog who gets in his way—and who may be working for a media baron fox. But they’ll need to unravel the conspiracy, and quickly, if they want to stop the next killing before it’s too late. Witty and irresistibly entertaining, this genre- bending mystery boldly mixes human and animal sensibilities in an entertaining satire of our cur- rent society.

Many organisms have evolved the ability to enter into and revive from a dormant state. They can survive for long periods in this state (often even months to years), yet can become responsive again within minutes or hours. This is often, but not necessarily, associated with desiccation. Preserving one’s body and reviving it in future generations is a dream of mankind. To date, however, we have failed to learn how cells, tissues or entire organisms can be made dormant or be effectively revived at ambient temperatures. In this book studies on organisms, ranging from aquatic cyanobacteria that produce akinetes to hibernating mammals, are presented, and reveal common but also divergent physiological and molecular pathways for surviving in a dormant form or for tolerating harsh environments. Attempting to learn the functions associated with dormancy and how they are regulated is one of the great future challenges. Its relevance to the preservation of cells and tissues is one of the key concerns of this book.
A murder victim makes a tasty feast for a family of flesh-eating maggots. But when the maggots become the murderer's next targets, their gruesome banquet turns into a killing field. Can a single courageous worm with a vision inspire the survivors to fight back? Perhaps a brilliant, twisted trick will bring down the monster and serve up the meat for a bloody new feast. And the maggots' moment of glory might give way to the dark fulfillment of their deepest, wildest secret. Don't miss this twisted horror tale from award-winning storyteller Robert T. Jeschonek, a master of mind-bending horror and dark fantasy.
Low temperature is a major environmental constraint impacting the geographic distribution and seasonal activity patterns of insects. Written for academic researchers in environmental physiology and entomology, this book explores the physiological and molecular mechanisms that enable insects to cope with a cold environment and places these findings into an evolutionary and ecological context. An introductory chapter provides a primer on insect cold tolerance and subsequent chapters in the first section discuss the organismal, cellular and molecular responses that allow insects to survive in the cold despite their, at best, limited ability to regulate their own body temperature. The second section, highlighting the evolutionary and macrophysiological responses to low temperature, is especially relevant for understanding the impact of global climate change on insect systems. A final section translates the knowledge gained from the rest of the book into practical applications including cryopreservation and the augmentation of pest management strategies.
