The Muricinae sub-family "as traditionally conceived includes 47 genera and subgenera, but it likely constitutes a polyphyletic assemblage. It is divided here into 5 informal groups" BOOK JACKET.
Physiology of Molluscs: A Collection of Selected Reviews is an informative two-volume sent that brings together some of the most important recent and unique developments in molluscan physiology. Volume One focuses on shell structure, mineralization, the dynamics of calcium transport, shell drilling, byssus proteins, locomotion, and reproduction. With the rapid development of cutting-edge proteomic, molecular biological, and cellular imaging techniques, our understanding of molluscan physiology, specifically in the areas of neurobiology, reproductive biology, and shell formation, has increased exponentially over the last several years. With contributions from some of the world's leading experts in the field of molluscan physiology, this valuable two-volume set fills this void and will serve as an important resource for researchers, professors, and students.
This book is a compilation, a revision of volumes I et II [of "Indonesian shells"] with additional species, and now consists of illustrations of 1,982 recent species from 171 families, 536 genera, and 723 fossil species from 113 families, 265 genera. Some of the fossil species are new records.
One of the leading textbooks in its field, Bringing Fossils to Life applies paleobiological principles to the fossil record while detailing the evolutionary history of major plant and animal phyla. It incorporates current research from biology, ecology, and population genetics, bridging the gap between purely theoretical paleobiological textbooks and those that describe only invertebrate paleobiology and that emphasize cataloguing live organisms instead of dead objects. For this third edition Donald R. Prothero has revised the art and research throughout, expanding the coverage of invertebrates and adding a discussion of new methodologies and a chapter on the origin and early evolution of life.
Field work, supplemented by laboratory studies, is a cornerstone for the geological sciences. This volume provides an introduction to general field work through selected topics that illustrate specific techniques and methodologies. One hundred and twenty-three main entries prepared by leading authorities from around the world deal with aspects of exploration surveys, geotechnical engineering, environmental management. field techniques, mapping, prospecting, and mining. Special efforts were made to include topics that consider aspects of environmental geology in particular those subjects that involve field inspections related to, for example, the placement of artificial fills, sediment control in canals and waterways, the geologic effects of cities, or the importance of expansive soils to environmental management and engineering. In addition, some widely ranging topics dealing with legal affairs, geological methodology, the scope and organization of geology, report writing, and other concepts, such as those related to plate tectonics and continental drift, provide a necessary perspective to the arena of field geology.
This is a field guide to marine mollusks. Thisbook was created to fill, what is perceived to be, a void in the popular literature, namely an affordable reference guide to the sea shells found in the CalifornianMarine Molluscan Province. It is not intended as a comprehensive compendium ofthe shelled marine mollusks in the province, but rather is limited to those taxalikely to be encountered between the intertidal zone and depths ordinarilyaccessible by scuba diving. Some deeper water taxa are included because they areparticularly beautiful, well known or popular. Specifically excluded are thosespecies which we deemed to be micro shells, namely species where the average sizeis 7 mm or less; this necessarily excludes a great many families of marine mollusks.
