Beelden van de dieren- en plantenwereld van het tropische regenwoud in Puerto Rico.
Excerpt from Forests of Porto Rico: Past, Present, and Future, and Their Physical and Economic Environment By far the greater part of this land lies in the mountains. Except for a few of the more accessible tracts, comparatively little is known about its present condition, or even its location, since in only one or two instances has any survey or detailed examination been made. General information gathered in the vicinity of some of the larger tracts indicates that only a very small amount of this land supports a productive forest, except a tract in the Sierra de Luquillo. The greater part is at present an idle, unproductive, grass or brush covered waste. In some few instances it is so situated as to be suitable for coffee culture, but in the aggregate it is of slight agricultural value, though it has a large potential value as forest land. Excerpt from Notes on the Forest Conditions of Porto Rico Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a, report entitled N otes on the Forest Conditions of Porto Rico, by Mr. Robert T. Hill, of the United States Geological Survey, and to recommend its publication as Bulletin No. 25 of this Division? While the report is in no sense hmal or complete, it contains a preliminary statement sufficiently full to answer the great majority of questions of immediate interest con cerning forestry in Porto Rico. It embraces the results of observations made during a rapid recon'noissance through the military department of Porto Rico by Mr. Bill in J an uary, 1899, during Which he became familiar With its forests, and by inquiry among various persons engaged in wood-working trades obtained valuable information as to the quali ties and uses of the native timbers. The report contains not only a, clear statement of the forest resources of Porto Rico and the extent of its timber lands, but also such succinct descriptions of the physical features of the island as are necessary for an understanding of its forest problems.
