Iran is host to some of Asia's most diverse animal wildlife. Its lush Caspian coastline, arid central deserts and fertile plains are the habitat for a vast range of creatures. Eskander Firouz's prize-winning book is the most comprehensive work to date on the fauna of Iran. Indeed it is the only book to cover all of Iran's vertebrate fauna, comprising mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Despite the emergence of a conservation movement in the 1960s and '70s, the last quarter century has witnessed continuing environmental degradation and the destruction of natural habitats in Iran. The position of a number of species unique to Iran, such as the Asiatic cheetah, is critical. More than an invaluable source of scientific knowledge, Eskander Firouz's book also alerts the public to an environmental situation in Iran which is becoming increasingly imperilled.
The work describes the general ecological aspects of Iran as well as West and Central Asia in the introduction. The book includes three chapters, each describing the climate, geology and soil characteristics, vegetation and forest types, site demands of the main tree species and the ecogram of them, management and socio-economic issues of three different phytogeographical regions, mainly the Hyrcanian, Irano-Turanian, and Saharo-Sindian. Each chapter contains a table for introducing the English and Botanical names of the plant species mentioned in the chapter. The information presented in this book is based on personal experiences and results of research projects of the authors, as well as experiences of other forest scientists in Iran. The references are given at the end of each chapter separately. The book contains 10 tables, 37 black and white and 55 color pictures.
This book presents an overview study about plant biogeography and vegetation of the high mountains of Central and South-West Asia, by a group of specialists familiar with its area and plant growth and ecology. This book discusses its ecological and evolutionary drivers and also its conservation priorities. Central and South-West Asia is one of the most diverse areas in the northern hemisphere and several biodiversity hotspots are concentrated in this region. Most of the biodiversity hotspots are associated with high mountain ranges of the region. Moreover, these mountains have been immigration corridors for the Central Asian flora to reach Euro-Siberian and Mediterranean regions. Despite its importance, there is no overview publication to present the plant biogeography and vegetation of these mountains and most of the publications are local or rather imprecise
This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Although in the last few years the study of painting in 19th century Iran has made considerable progress it still remains somewhat tradition bound. It would seem that art historians find it difficult to go beyond oil paintings, lacquer, and enamel. In 1998, Robinson, the doyen of Qajar art history, wrote: "Qajar painting found its most prestigious outlets in oil painting, lacquer, and enamel." In this study it is shown that paintings were probably the most important form of expression for painters for many centuries and as prestigious as the other forms of painting. Mural paintings were very popular and were to be found on various types of buildings ranging from the royal palaces, private homes, bath-houses to a religious shrine. Painting was a craft and a business that was actively pursued by artisans in most major towns in response to a general demand for-figurative art. As to the themes depicted these remained basically limited to (i) dynastic and epic (Qajar 'family portraits'; battles, hunts; Shahnameh scenes), (ii) sensual (flora, fauna, erotic), and (iii) religious (prophets, lmams, 'olama) subjects. These subjects occurred in any type of building irrespective of its function. The wide use of figurative representation in religious buildings and practice is of great interest. People almost invariably assume that Moslems until recent times did not tolerate paintings and the like of humans and animals adorning public and private buildings and publications. This study shows otherwise. There is even evidence of the use of paintings as religious icons, which is a totally neglected subject. Rock reliefs and other forms of sculptured works in and on buildings and its accessories such as doors show a similar development as mural paintings. Although information is even less copious than for wall paintings, it is clear that the depiction of living beings in the forms of sculptures was very widespread and pre-dates the Qajar period. The nature and form of murals were influenced by the increased contacts between Persia/Iran and the outside world, in particular Europe and India. This holds in particular for the use of prints and the occurrence of European scenes in frescos and other forms of paintings.
