One small act of kindness ripples out to connect four kids in this stirring novel by the author of the beloved The Benefits of Being an Octopus. Libby comes from a long line of bullies. She wants to be different, but sometimes that doesn’t work out. To bolster herself, she makes a card with the message You are amazing. That card sets off a chain reaction that ends up making a difference in the lives of some kids who could also use a boost—be it from dealing with bullies, unaccepting families, or the hole that grief leaves. Receiving an encouraging message helps each kid summon up the thing they need most, whether it’s bravery, empathy, or understanding. Because it helps them realize they matter—and that they're not flying solo anymore.
Louis is a little boy who is a friend of birds, so when he sees a poster showing a little dodo bird being kept in a circus and made to do dangerous tricks, he must take action.
Faced with extinction, but blessed with the spirit of flight, Bright Bird learns to fly like a real true-bird with the help of special wings.
Dodo's Origins My cousin DK has an affinity for flying pigs. As unique flying pigs were encountered, I swooped them up and gleefully sent them to her. One day, a metal place card-holder pig caught my eye. It was all alone on a sale table. I grabbed it with plans of adding some wings and sending it off. As this little metal pig was painted and its wings attached, Dodo came to life. While his story developed, Boyd captured images, including locations we had previously visited and trinkets we had collected with our daughter. During some adventures, Dodo encounters these places and trinkets, which are intended to remind our daughter how much her companionship is missed. As imagination and images materialize, Dodo's adventures will continue.
The most comprehensive book to date about these two famously extinct birds.
