The Law Library presents the complete text of the Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska - Chinook Salmon Bycatch Management in Bering Sea Pollock Fishery (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regulation) (NOAA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 NMFS issues regulations to implement Amendment 91 to the Fishery Management Plan for Groundfish of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area (FMP). Amendment 91 is an innovative approach to managing Chinook salmon bycatch in the Bering Sea pollock fishery that combines a prohibited species catch (PSC) limit on the amount of Chinook salmon that may be caught incidentally with an incentive plan agreement and performance standard designed to minimize bycatch to the extent practicable in all years. This action is necessary to minimize Chinook salmon bycatch in the Bering Sea pollock fishery to the extent practicable while maintaining the potential for the full harvest of the pollock total allowable catch. Amendment 91 is intended to promote the goals and objectives of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the FMP, and other applicable laws. The Law Library presents the complete text of the Fisheries of the Exclusive Economic Zone Off Alaska - Bycatch Management in the Bering Sea Pollock Fishery (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regulation) (NOAA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 NMFS issues this final rule to implement Amendment 110 to the Fishery Management Plan for Groundfish of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (FMP). Amendment 110 and this final rule improve the management of Chinook and chum salmon bycatch in the Bering Sea pollock fishery by creating a comprehensive salmon bycatch avoidance program. This action is necessary to minimize Chinook and chum salmon bycatch in the Bering Sea pollock fishery to the extent practicable while maintaining the potential for the full harvest of the pollock total allowable catch (TAC) within specified prohibited species catch (PSC) limits. Amendment 110 is intended to promote the goals and objectives of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the FMP, and other applicable laws. "This document is an Environmental Assessment/Regulatory Impact Review/Initial Regulatory Flexibility Analysis analyzing proposed management measures that would apply exclusively to the directed pollock fishery in the Western and Central Gulf of Alaska (GOA). The measures under consideration include settings prohibited species catch limits in the Central and Western GOA for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), which would close the directed pollock fishery in those regulatory areas once attained; full retention of salmon species; and increased observer coverage on vessels under 60 feet length overall. The purpose of this action is to address prohibited species catch of Chinook salmon in the GOA, and establish measures that protect against the risk of high Chinook salmon removals in the GOA pollock trawl fisheries in future years"--Abstract.
This report indicates that climate change will significantly affect the availability and trade of fish products, especially for those countries most dependent on the sector, and calls for effective adaptation and mitigation actions encompassing food production.
