Excerpt from Across the Ferry: First Impressions of America and Its People Stepping on board the steamer at Liverpool, a familiar voice greeted me with the words, "Are you going across the ferry?" My friend, the representative of a London business firm, going often to and fro, thought as little of the transatlantic voyage as of crossing from Dover to Calais. The phrase sounded strange at the time, and it came to remembrance long afterwards, when seeking some short title under which to publish in separate form a series of papers, which had appeared in the Leisure Hour, headed "First Impressions of America and its People." Excerpt from Impressions of America, Vol. 1 of 2: During the Years 1833, 1834, and 1835 I seek to describe its people as I saw them, clear-headed, energetic, frank, and hospitable; a community suited to, and labouring for, their country's advancement, rather than for their own present comfort. This is and will be their lot for probably another generation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Civilization in the United States, First and Last Impressions of America I, too, had seen General Grant in England, and did not find him interesting. If I said the truth, I should say that I thought him ordinary-looking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Impressions of America Turn back now to (i), i.e. The experiment with the forefinger alone, and keeping the attention fixed on the finger, look first at some object not very far behind the finger (i.e. On the side of it away from the eye), and then at some object much further off: you will notice that the further off is the object at which you look, the greater is the distance between the two images of the finger, so that by looking at an object a suitable distance away, the two images of the forefinger may be made to move as far apart as we wish, within certain limits. It is in this way that we can bring the two stereoscopic pictures into coincidence, and although it is impossible to avoid a somewhat tedious description of this method, in practice it is quite easy, especially after a person has once succeeded.
