A passionate call to action from a veteran prosecutor, Firewater examines alcohol--its history, its myths, and its devastating impact on Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike.
Fighting Firewater Fictions calls for community re-organization around a band development policy that looks beyond the reserve
Between 1870 and 1875, hundreds of Blackfoot Indians died as a result of the whisky trade, either killed in drunken quarrels, shot by whisky traders, frozen to death while drunk, or from the poisonous effects of the whisky itself. Chiefs lost their authority, people traded everything they owned, and entire communities were decimated. At first, alcohol was only available during visits to the Hudson's Bay or North West Company trading posts, but when Montana traders began to pour unlimited supplies of whisky into Blackfoot camps in exchange for buffalo robes, the Blackfoot were swept into a malestrom of alcohol, violence, and death. Historian Hugh Dempsey offers a comprehensive and highly readable look at the people and history of the trade, the impact on Native peoples, and its effect on US-Canada relations. He includes new research and a thoughtful exploration of the events and circumstances that brought a proud people to their knees.
A revision and expansion of the author's thesis (M.A.), University of Nevada, Reno, 1972. Bibliography: p. 139-153. Includes index.

Moat's 6th collection. Relating to episodes in an 'inner journey' or search, these are not the self-seeking of an individual man but of something more general: bewildered masculinity. The title poems are the proof and achievement of this search and the Miraculous Mandarin emerges as an all-demanding myth of the male which finds peculiar resonance in the context of our contemporary reassertion of the female. Of his previous work, critic Michael Baldwin wrote: Serious, satiric, gnomic and...witty.
Rookie cop Kate Prospero only has one more training assignment to pass before she's officially sworn in to Babylon Police Department. I'm Cisco Suarez and this is the end of the line. I've been beaten, shackled, killed once or twice, but hey, who's counting? I put my foot down at being lit up like a candle at my daughter's tenth birthday party. Some things you take personal. Revenge won't be easy. The Miami voodoo underground turned on me. An uppity wizard cartel is creeping into my business. If that's not enough, I keep seeing the same damn black cat everywhere I go. Talk about crummy luck. None of it matters. I've got laser focus on my archenemy, a jinn with a knack for fire. News flash: I'm done being burned. Connor Hatch is going down for good, even if I have to drag him to hell myself. If you like Jim Butcher, Shayne Silvers, Steve McHugh, or John Conroe, then you are going to love Domino Finn's contribution to the smart-talking MC that's perpetually stuck between a rock and a hard place. What readers are saying: ⚡⚡ "Black Magic Outlaw is a standout in a world of lookalikes." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "Cisco is a tattooed, necromancing, shadow-morphing, 'Live and Let Die' meets Jack Reacher kind of guy... only better." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "Urban fantasy just went up a notch." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "The magic is far more imaginative than anything I have read since Sanderson." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "A quantum leap in storytelling." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "Cisco is the kind of character you can't help cheering for, with a mix of boyish charm, a dash of arrogance, but always the bighearted underdog." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "Action junkies will love this series." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "Enough dead bodies, zombies, and wizards to fill a small stadium." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "Jason Bourne meets urban fantasy. Good pace, engaging lead, and fresh mythology. Loved it." ⚡⚡ ⚡⚡ "What a great path of destruction Cisco leaves..." ⚡⚡
"At once a travel tale, a historical meditation, a Holocaust revenge fantasy, and a bedroom farce."—D. T. Max, New York Times Book Review Leib Goldkorn, aged musician, first appeared almost a quarter-century ago in The Steinway Quintet. Now Leib has replaced his magic flute with his phallus: it is love, longing, and the quest for sexual fulfillment that must stave off both his own death and the imminent destruction of the Jews. In Ice he rescues the celebrated skater Sonja Henie from Hitler's clutches. In Fire his paramour is Carmen Miranda. And in Water he engages in a South Sea Island intrigue with a famous swimming star of the 1940s. Meanwhile, in the present, Leib seeks consummation with three other inamoratas: Clara, his wife; Hustler model Miss Crystal Knight; and the critic Michiko Kakutani (causing a real-life literary scandal). In this "wickedly funny" (Elle) and no less heartbreaking novel, Leib Goldkorn emerges as one of American literature's most enduring, and endearing, creations. A New York Times Notable Book; a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year.
