Excavations in the Middle Euphrates Valley over the past fifty years have profoundly altered our understanding of the history of Mesopotamia, Syria, and Palestine. This monograph covers a fifty-year period from 1946-1996 in the life's work of the renowned African-American artist Elizabeth Catlett. Catlett was born and raised in Washington, DC. She received her B.A. in painting from Howard University in Washington and her M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Iowa. From the beginning of her career as an artist and a teacher in the early 1940s, Catlett's themes have reflected her concerns for social injustice, the human condition, and her life as an African-American woman and mother. Formally, her sculpture draws upon African and pre-Columbian traditions, as well as early modernism in Europe, the United States and Mexico. For a period of twenty years Catlett was involved with the Taller de Grafica Popular, a collaborative print-making workshop that addressed the concerns of working people. She has exhibited her work internationally and it is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and The Studio Museum of Harlem in New York City, among many others.
This retrospective of the father of wall art covers 50 years of meaningful, passionate work by the renowned Turkish artist Burhan Dogançay. Since the early 1960s, Burhan Dogançay has followed the social, cultural, and political transformation of modern and contemporary culture through an examination of walls, which serve as templates for his art. Walls are mirrors of society, he says. From a wall, you can tell a lot about the people and the neighbourhood. I made an archive of our time. Whenever elections or important events happened in a country, I'd go. Walls serve as a testament to the passage of time, reflecting social, political, and economic change. They also bear witness to the assault of the elements and to the markings left by people. No other artist has explored urban walls as thoroughly and with the same passion as Dogançay. This catalog contains 126 illustrations of all the large- and small-scale works on canvas from the exhibition, in different media, including collages and installations, all drawn from 14 different series in the artist's oeuvre.
