Excerpt from Fifty Years of Association, Work Among Young Women 1866-1916: A History of Young Women's Christian Associations in the United States of America The purpose of this historical account is to show why and how Young Women's Christian Associations came into being and to indicate that the first half century is but the beginning of the movement. In order to represent the conditions which called out certain features, the language of old reports, circulars, addresses and correspondence has been freely used; while there has been a wealth of these original sources, in some instances it is undated, or annual and biennial reports have not stated the calendar month or year in which a measure was passed or new ventures undertaken. Some of the attempts to determine these dates through comparison of material will probably prove faulty. I wish to thank all the friends who have assisted in collecting and comparing data and who have described historic work in which they had a part. It has been impossible to mention as many individual Associations as might have been desired. Emphasis has been laid on the recognition of unusual needs and the invention of successful means of meeting them and upon the development of phases of work rather than upon the consecutive events in given localities. Published in 1987: The writer of these simple pages has left the home duties of women, so long and ably discussed, on the one hand , and the questions of their social and political privileges on the other, and entered the broad, uncultivated field lying between the two.
This collection of essays provides the first systematic and multidisciplinary analysis of the role of gender in the formation and dissemination of the American social sciences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Other books have traced the history of academic social science without paying attention to gender, or have described women's social activism while ignoring its relation to the production of new social knowledge. In contrast, this volume draws long overdue attention to the ways in which changing gender relations shaped the development and organization of the new social knowledge. And it challenges the privileged position that academic--and mostly male--social science has been granted in traditional histories by showing how women produced and popularized new forms of social knowledge in such places as settlement houses and the Russell Sage Foundation. The book's varied perspectives, building on recent work in history and feminist theory, break from the traditional view of the social sciences as objective bodies of expert knowledge. Contributors examine new forms of social knowledge, rather, as discourses about gender relations and as methods of cultural critique. The book will create a new framework for understanding the development of both social science and the history of gender relations in the United States.
