Annotation The Fifth Mexican School, held from November 29 to December 11, 1992, was devoted to topics in the frontier of theoretical and experimental physics of the fundamental reactions. The topics: gauge symmetries, topology and quantization; CP violation in the standard model and beyond; introduction to chiral perturbation theory; knot theory and quantum gravity in loop space--a primer; quantum groups; new results from experiments at the HERA storage ring and from ARGUS; an elementary introduction to conformal field theories; and quantum mechanics and decoherent histories. This book is principally concerned with the relatively complex small molecules produced by plants, which are important as drugs, fine chemicals, fragrances, flavours and biologically-active dietary constituents. In a wide-ranging series of thematic essays, it covers key aspects of their role in plant ecology, their metabolism in the plant, their discovery, characterisation and use and their significance in the diet. Biotechnology, including prospects for the genetic engineering of metabolic pathways, for biotransformations and also for the production of biologically-active proteins, is the focus of the final section of the book. The overall aim of the volume is to provide, in each of the selected subject areas, a personal critique which is readily accessible to the advanced undergraduate student and to the non-specialist research worker alike.
The book reviews the current status of tau physics. It addresses the properties of the tau lepton and summarizes results achieved with tau leptons in the fields of precision tests of the Standard Model, investigations of the strong interaction and many searches for new physics beyond the scope of the Standard Model.
Chiral dynamics provides a rigorous and model-independent methodology for making QCD predictions at the confinement scale. This helps particularly in the testing of the standard model. The workshop reported here was focused on theoretical predictions and the measurements of physical processes, analyzing carefully the phenomenology needed to bridge the gap between the two. Besides the lectures, this volume also contains summaries of the working groups on Â-Â-scattering, ÂN-interaction, photo/electro-pion-production, and on chiral anomaly. This book is a thorough review of the state of the art and it addresses researchers as well as graduate students.
