Field manual (FM) 3-04.513 is intended for use by commanders and U.S. military maintenance personnel operating and employing resources in an aircraft recovery operational environment. This manual is the Army's doctrine for battlefield and garrison recovery operations. The operational concepts described in this manual are based on Army doctrine established in FM 1, FM 3-0, FM 3-04.111, FM 3-04.500, and FM 3-50.1. Emphasis is placed on modular force structure and the enhanced operational capability provided by Army aviation transformation. This publication applies to the Regular Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated. It builds on the collective knowledge and experience gained through recent operations, numerous exercises, and the deliberate process of informed reasoning. This publication is rooted in time-tested principles and fundamentals, while accommodating new technologies and evolving responses to the diverse threats to national security. Aircraft recovery missions include the assessment, repair, and retrieval, if possible, of aircraft forced down due to component malfunction, accident, or combat-related damage that prevents the continued safe flight or operation of the aircraft. The aircraft recovery mission is complete upon the return of all personnel and either: The return of the aircraft through self-recovery or dedicated recovery utilizing aerial or surface recovery methods and techniques. The selective cannibalization and destruction or abandonment of the aircraft. Aircraft recovery is a pre-planned mission for all units with assigned or operational control of Army aircraft and may require extensive coordination with supporting units. Aircraft recovery is time sensitive to the tactical situation. Aircraft recovery and maintenance evacuations are closely related, however, maintenance evacuation is the physical act of moving an aircraft from one maintenance location to another. This manual is a guide and intended for use by commanders at all levels. Unless otherwise stated, use of the term battalion or company also refers to squadron or troop. Similarly, use of the term aviation maintenance company (AMC) refers to aviation maintenance troop (AMT). Also, the use of the term aviation support company (ASC) refers to aviation support troop (AST). In actual practice, the procedures outlined in this manual may be modified or augmented to account for force size; availability of aerial and ground assets; manpower, time and distance considerations; and the tactical situation.

This manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 3-04.13 Aircraft Recovery Operations April 2018, provides guidance concerning maintenance personnel operating and employing resources in an aircraft recovery operational environment. The principle audience for ATP 3-04.13 is aviation maintenance commanders, leaders, officers, technicians, noncommissioned officers (NCOs), and aircraft repair and maintenance personnel. Trainers and educators throughout the Army also use this publication. The term 'aircraft' refers to all Army aircraft types (rotary-wing, fixed-wing [FW], and unmanned aircraft systems [UAS]), unless a specific aircraft is identified in this publication. ATP 3-04.13 uses joint terms where applicable. Selected joint and Army terms and definitions appear in both the glossary and the text. Terms for which ATP 3-04.13 is the proponent publication (the authority) are marked with an asterisk (*) in the glossary. ATP 3-04.13 applies to all Active Army, Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, United States Army Reserve, and Department of Defense (DOD) civilian and contract maintenance personnel. Commanders must consider the contents of this document and the particular circumstances in which they find themselves (national military objectives, available forces, threat capabilities, and rules of engagements) when planning maintenance operations.
Field manual (FM) 3-04.203 still presents information to plan and conduct common aviation tasks for fixed- and rotary-wing flight. However, it has become more inclusive and its scope broadened to reduce the number of manuals used by Army crewmembers for reference. One of the underlying premises of Army aviation is if crewmembers understand 'why' they will be better prepared to 'do' when confronted with the unexpected. FM 3-04.203 endeavors to ensure that crewmembers understand the basic physics of flight, and the dynamics associated with fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. A comprehensive understanding of these principles will better prepare a crewmember for flight, transition training, and tactical flight operations. Because the U.S. Army prepares its Soldiers to operate anywhere in the world, this publication describes the unique requirements and flying techniques crewmembers will use to successfully operate in extreme environments, not always encountered in home station training. As a full-time force, the U.S. Army is capable of using the advantages of its superior night operation technologies to leverage combat power. To that end, Army crewmembers must be familiar and capable of performing their mission proficiently and tactically at night. The information on night vision systems (NVSs) and night operations in this circular will provide the basis for acquiring these skills. Every aviator understands that the primary purpose is to operate aircraft safely. Every crewmember must perform the mission effectively and decisively in tactical and combat operations. FM 3-04.203 also covers basic tactical flight profiles, formation flight, and air combat maneuvers. FM 3-04.203 is an excellent reference for Army crewmembers; however, it can not be expected that this circular is all inclusive or a full comprehension of the information will be obtained by simply reading the text. A firm understanding will begin to occur as crewmembers become more experienced in their particular aircraft, study the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) of their units, and study other sources of information. Crewmembers honing skills should review FM 3-04.203 periodically to gain new insights. This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated.
This manual, “Recovery and Battle Damage Assessment and Repair (FM 4-30.31),” provides the authoritative doctrine guidance on using recovery and repair assets on the battlefield. Practical methods of recovering or repairing equipment (disabled or immobilized) due to hazardous terrain, mechanical failure, or a hostile action are also addressed. Field manual (FM) 4-30.31 is directed toward both the leader and the technician. Tactically, it provides an overview of how recovery and battle damage assessment and repair (BDAR) assets are employed on the battlefield. Technically, it provides principles of resistance and mechanical applications to overcome them. Equipment, rigging techniques, and expedient repairs are summarized as a refresher for recovery-trained military personnel and as general guidance for others. The procedures and doctrine in this manual apply to both wartime operations and military operations other than war. Normally, BDAR should be used when and where standard maintenance practices are not practical because of the mission, enemy, terrain and weather, troops and support available, time available, civil considerations (METT-TC) or METT-T space and logistics (METT-TSL) for USMC. BDAR is not intended to replace standard maintenance practices but rather to supplement them under certain conditions. Standard maintenance procedures provide the best, most effective means of returning disabled equipment to the operational commander—provided adequate time, parts, and tools are available. High-risk battle damage repairs (involving possible danger to personnel or further damage to equipment) are only permitted in emergencies, normally in a battlefield environment, and only when authorized by the unit commander or his designated representative. The goal is to return a combat system to the battlefield in the least amount of time, while minimizing danger to personnel and equipment. BDAR techniques are not limited to simply restoring minimal functional combat capability. If full mission capability can be restored expediently with a limited expenditure of time and assets, it should be restored. This decision is based on METT-TC. Some BDAR techniques, if applied, may result in shortened lifespan or further damage to components. The commander must decide whether the risk of having one less piece of equipment outweighs the risk of applying a potentially destructive field-expedient repair. Each technique provides appropriate warnings and cautions, which list the system's limitations caused by the action. Personnel must use ground guides and extreme caution when operating recovery assets around or on an aircraft.
This United States Army and Marine Corps manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 4-31 / MCRP 3-40E.1 Recovery and Battle Damage Assessment and Repair (BDAR) November 2020, provides techniques on how recovery and battle damage assessment and repair (BDAR) are employed during operations. The principal audience for ATP 4-31/MCRP 3-40E.1 is all members of the profession of arms. Commanders and staffs of Army headquarters serving as joint task force or multinational headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. Soldiers, Marines, and officers who perform recovery operations and battle damage assessment and repair for their service perform a vital role of keeping units and personnel safe while maintaining and providing the effective operational readiness rates required to accomplish the mission. Recovery personnel, as identified in this publication, includes every person that plays a role in recovery operations or battle damage assessment and repair. This includes professional recovery personnel, such as maintenance control officers, warrant technicians and maintenance teams. All personnel involved in recovery operations/battle damage assessment and repair need to understand the environment in which they operate. This manual provides information on recovery support to unit operations including operations within the Joint environment. It is imperative for all personnel engaged in recovery operations or battle damage assessment and repair support operations to have an understanding of the various staff organizations that have a role in recovery planning and support. It will be necessary for a recovery support activity to contact the higher, lower, or adjacent headquarters (both sustainment and operational) to coordinate support, report status, request technical assistance, or request additional resources. This manual presents the roles and missions of the various recovery organizations to enhance coordination. Readers should follow the guidelines in this publication as closely as possible within the constraints and restrictions of the tactical situation.
