Inka Parei’s third novel again looks back at German history through the eyes of its characters. In a race against time, a man has to find out whether his ex-wife was contaminated by fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. He revisits and questions his own memories of working in the chilling ‘cold centre’ —the air-conditioning plant for the East German party newspaper. Was he a cog at the heart of the system, did he fail to prevent a tragic accident, and can he find out exactly what happened back then before it’s too late? Berlin, 2006: a man worked in the Neues Deutschland newspaper building in the 1980s and later left East Germany. One day he gets a call from his ex-wife. She’s in hospital, waiting for an exact cancer diagnosis. To help her, he returns to the city and tries to reconstruct the events of a few days in May 1986. Was a truck from the Ukraine that she came into contact with contaminated? And why does the death of a workmate for which he blamed himself now seem more doubtful than ever? Are the events back then the reason why he’s never really come to rest in life? He soon begins to lose control over his days in Berlin, entering into a desperate search for orientation over a fracture in his own life—one he has never got over. Written in Parei’s characteristic precise prose, the novel is a timely reminder of how we react to accidents, nuclear and otherwise, and a bleakly realistic description of East Berlin before the Wall fell. But its tight and dizzying structure keeps readers on the edge of their seats as the narrator tries to solve his very own mystery.
Breadth of Bodies seeks to investigate and dismantle the language and stereotypes often used to describe professional dancers with disabilities. Spearheaded by dancer/writer Emmaly Wiederholt and dance educator Silva Laukkanen with illustrations by visual artist Liz Brent-Maldonado, the team collected interviews with 35 professional dance artists with disabilities from 15 countries, asking about training, access, and press, as well as looking at the state of the field.
The following is an evaluation of Jane Desmond's (1997) text Meaning in Motion: New Cultural Studies of Dance.
Dance is the art least susceptible to preservation since its embodied, kinaesthetic nature has proven difficult to capture in notation and even in still or moving images. However, frameworks have been established and guidance made available for keeping dances, performances, and choreographers’ legacies alive so that the dancers of today and tomorrow can experience and learn from the dances and dancers of the past. In this volume, a range of voices address the issue of dance preservation through memory, artistic choice, interpretation, imagery and notation, as well as looking at relevant archives, legal structures, documentation and artefacts. The intertwining of dance preservation and creativity is a core theme discussed throughout this text, pointing to the essential continuity of dance history and dance innovation. The demands of preservation stretch across time, geographies, institutions and interpersonal connections, and this book focuses on the fascinating web that supports the fragile yet urgent effort to sustain our dancing heritage. The articles in this book were originally published in the journal Dance Chronicle: Studies in Dance and the Related Arts.
The relationship between religion and dance is as old as humankind. Contemporary methods for studying this relationship date back a century. The difference between these two time frames is significant: scholars are still developing theories and methods capable of illuminating this vast history that take account of their limited place within it. A History of Theory and Method in the Study of Religion and Dance takes on a primary challenge of doing so: overcoming a conceptual dichotomy between “religion” and “dance” forged in the colonial era that justified western Christian hostility towards dance traditions across six continents over six centuries. Beginning with its enlightenment roots, LaMothe narrates a selective history of this dichotomy, revealing its ongoing work in separating dance studies from religious studies. Turning to the Bushmen of the African Kalahari, LaMothe introduces an ecokinetic approach that provides scholars with conceptual resources for mapping the generative interdependence of phenomena that appear as “dance” and/or “religion.”

Simpozija ICTM Študijske skupine za etnokoreologijo, 29. julij–5. avgust 2022, Brežice, Slovenija') vsebuje izbor prispevkov, predstavljenih na 32. simpoziju ICTM Študijske skupine za etnokoreologijo, osrednji mednarodni konferenci s področja etnokoreologije, plesne antropologije in sorodnih disciplin, ki je potekal v Brežicah od 25. julija do 5. avgusta 2022. Prispevki, predstavljeni na simpoziju in vključeni v zbornik, obravnavajo dve ključni temi: ponovni premislek o ustvarjanju znanja v raziskavah plesa in vključevanje/izključevanje v plesnih skupnostih. Poleg tega je poseben razdelek namenjen plakatom, predstavljenim na simpoziju, dodatek pa ponuja vpogled v utelešeno izkušnjo dogodka, čeprav so ga nekateri doživeli le prek spleta.
