The Texas State Historical Association is pleased to partner with the Collin County Historical Society to make Seymour V. Connor's The Peters Colony of Texas available once again. This classic work of Texas history, long out of print, was praised by John H. Jenkins in Basic Texas Books as "the best study of one of the largest land grants in Texas history." The TSHA first published The Peters Colony of Texas in 1959. The Peters Colony, totaling 16,000 square miles of North Texas, now includes twenty-six counties. Jenkins called it "a masterpiece of weaving together the threads of an extremely difficult historical puzzle with only the meagerest of source materials." For many years the book, with its documentation of early migration to Texas, was available to the public only in noncirculating library collections and an occasional appearance on the rare book market. The TSHA and the Collin County Historical Society are pleased to offer a paperback edition of The Peters Colony of Texas to bring this significant work of Texas history back to public attention.
Genealogical research in U.S. censuses begins with identifying correct county jurisdictions ??o assist in this identification, the map Guide shows all U.S. county boundaries from 1790 to 1920. On each of the nearly 400 maps the old county lines are superimposed over the modern ones to highlight the boundary changes at ten-year intervals. This book contains the 1757 censuses for the six Villas del Norte; Laredo, Dolores, Revilla, Mier, Camargo, and Reynosa. Included in this book is a name index of these censuses in alphabetical order by last name. It also includes information about the Indians of each Villa. This book is a great genealogical resource and a great addition to any library.
Arranged alphabetically, this work lists the names and counties of residence of approximately 18,000 Texas taxpayers. (A "poll" tax of one dollar was levied on every white male resident over the age of twenty-one and on women who were heads of household.) By 1846, when Texas became the thirty-sixth state in the Union, there were sixty-seven county governments already organized as functioning units of the state, yet no authorized census of the state was undertaken until 1850. This 1846 poll list, compiled from the original tax rolls housed in the Texas State Archives, is actually the nearest thing we have to a complete census of the period.
