How meaning works—from monkey calls to human language, from spoken language to sign language, from gestures to music—and how meaning is connected to truth. We communicate through language, connecting what we mean to the words we say. But humans convey meaning in other ways as well, with facial expressions, hand gestures, and other methods. Animals, too, can get their meanings across without words. In What It All Means, linguist Philippe Schlenker explains how meaning works, from monkey calls to human language, from spoken language to sign language, from gestures to music. He shows that these extraordinarily diverse types of meaning can be studied and compared within a unified approach—one in which the notion of truth plays a central role. “It’s just semantics” is often said dismissively. But Schlenker shows that semantics—the study of meaning—is an unsung success of modern linguistics, a way to investigate some of the deepest questions about human nature using tools from the empirical and formal sciences. Drawing on fifty years of research in formal semantics, Schlenker traces how meaning comes to life. After investigating meaning in primate communication, he explores how human meanings are built, using in some cases sign languages as a guide to the workings of our inner “logic machine.” Schlenker explores how these meanings can be enriched by iconicity in sign language and by gestures in spoken language, and then turns to more abstract forms of iconicity to understand the meaning of music. He concludes by examining paradoxes, which—being neither true nor false—test the very limits of meaning.
“Think of a scenario, say it in five words or less, and I will sew it for you.” P.Nosa uses a sewing machine to draw. He makes custom patches inspired by people’s imagination. The machine is portable: powered by a solar panel and a bicycle that generates electricity. Here is a collection of scenarios and their underlying stories from sewing tours across the United States (2004 - 2014).
A sheriff joins forces with a spirited woman to search for missing persons on the western frontier in this nineteenth-century inspirational romance. Former lawman Zane Robinson never thought he’d wear a badge again. But to locate his missing twin brother, Zane’s taking on his identity as sheriff of Proud Bend, Colorado. There he discovers heiress Rachel Smith conducting her own search for a mother and child who’ve also disappeared from the small town. The cases could be connected, so Zane reluctantly agrees to team up with the feisty beauty. Rachel can’t afford to be seen getting too close to Zane—it could impact her ministry for misguided young women. But as the investigation continues, she’s hopelessly drawn to the gruff yet honorable lawman. Though trust doesn’t come easily to Rachel or Zane, in searching for the missing will they risk losing their hearts?
Set in 1995, in the southwestern desert, known as the Four Corners, Go Fast, Go Crazy is the suspenseful cross-generational story of one family's secrets and the redemptive value of discovering painful truths. The novel follows the trail of Cliff and Jimmy, two inseparable twenty year olds with uncertain futures. Feeling persecuted by the local sheriff, they steal their '68 Camaro from the police impound lot and cruise into the desert where they meet the beautiful Monique, a French tourist with a camera and car problems. After joining forces, the trio play a dangerous cat and mouse game with the police as they go on a small time crime spree, until they take refuge at crazy Uncle Milo's ranch, where they discover all is not as it seems. In the final showdown with the police, everyone must make decisions that will affect them all forever. If the truth does set you free, the road to the truth can exact a heavy toll. This explosive second novel deals with some of the uncomfortable legacies of the 1960's on today's youth, from a fresh and contemporary perspective. It is a rite of passage from which there is ultimately no escape.
