But there are im mense areas in the West at present unutilized, except in the primitive fashion of the herdsman on the open range, on which the problem is to find grasses that will produce a crop under arid or semi-arid conditions. In so far as the solution of this difficulty has been ac complished, the results are set forth in discussing the individual grasses. Attention is Called to investiga tions now in progress with a View to finding other grasses adapted to these hard conditions. The chapter on seeds was contributed by Mr. Edgar Brown, in charge of the Seed Laboratory of the United States Department of Agriculture.
