Excerpt from Famous American Actors of to-Day, Vol. 2 Thorne's education had been obtained, with others of the young members of the family, at the Cathedral School in Montreal, and for a while at St. John's Col lege in New York. His schooling, therefore was not very extensive, yet he showed no lack in after years of that information and accuracy that belong to the adequately trained man. In point of fact, he was fond of discussing questions of moment in literature, his tory, the drama, and the like. Being a man of inde pendence, he naturally had views of his own, views that were marked at least with vigor. He loved to gather about him, at his home and his table, men of thought, and in this way formed intimacies with Robert Inger soll and others. It is worth while noting that he was so strong in his likes and dislikes that there was no concealment of either with him. He was absolute and peremptory in this respect, and had no compromise with people that did not please him. It may be a tri ing detail to record, but it was one of the curious points in his character that he was easily bored; and yet, like the severe Edwin Forrest in his intimacy with the minstrel Christy, he would find diversion at times with ordinary but volatile people. Excerpt from Famous American Actors of to-Day, Vol. 1: Edited by Frederic Edward McKay and Charles E. L. Wingate This volume is not designed for the use of theatrical people alone. Inasmuch as the various chapters are written by authors who arc recognized as authorities upon the subjects coming under their pens, as well as writers experienced in pleasing the public, it is hoped that the book will fill a helpful corner in the biographical department of home libraries, while at the same time it acquaints general readers with the careers and methods of work of our American actors. Although the theatre has existed in this country for a century and a half, and in these later days has flourished wonderfully, the literature of the stage is meagre. Of histories there are none that cover the entire period; of biographical works there arc very few, and none that deal, after the manner of this volume, with any considerable number of contemporaneous actors. Excerpt from Famous Actors of the Day Famous actors, as a companion volume to Famous Actresses, follows the general plan of that book. The criticisms and esti mates of the different players' abilities, ex cept in cases where credit is given, are the author's own. The biographical facts, in terviews, and anecdotes were obtained from various sources. They have in all cases been carefully verified, and the imaginings of the press agent have been scrupulously ruled out. In selecting the list of persons to be considered in the work, those actors most prominent on the American stage to day were given the preference, and couse quently it was found necessary to omit a number whose past achievements give them high rank in their profession. Excerpt from The American Stage of to-Day: Biographies and Photographs of One Hundred Leading Actors and Actresses Theatre, and which it was thought would. Protect him from extortion. Notwithstanding Booth's lack of business sagacity, his confiding disposition, his indifference to material gain, and his propensity to drift and dream, he earned three successive fortune-s, and, dying at the age of sixty, left an estate of more than half a million. His pecuniary success was great, but his greater success was that of mind and soul. He was a great man, and his memory will be honored always in the annals of our stage. Booth's Theatre, after he left it, passed through the custody of various speculative managers, and ultimately it was abandoned: but in his hands it never was a fail ure, and in endeavors that are now current the spirit of it seems to live again and to breathe a monition to the People to guard and promote the sacred cause of which he made it the emblem: for it is with the People, in their love and enjoyment of acting and in their allegiance to the Actor and his Art, that the Present of the Theatre rests, and it is to the People that its Future is committed.
