Excerpt from Familiar English Quotations Twenty - five years ago I published a volume of Familiar Quotations, which was almost immediately out of print. This I believe was the first book on the subject which gave in a collected form the quotations in daily use, with the places named in the works whence the ex tracts were taken. About seventeen years ago a more comprehensive edition of the work was which met with a large sale, and which was the precursor of numerous books of a simi lar character. I had, however, long ago enter tained the idea that a volume of a smaller and more handy character than the above named was required, and the present small publication is the result. I hope it may be found to be a use ful addendum to the Latin and French Quotation Books which have already appeared. Excerpt from Familiar Quotations: A Collection of Passages, Phrases, and Proverbs Traced to Their Sources in Ancient and Modern Literature It is not easy to determine in all cases the degree of familiarity that may belong to phrases and sentences which present themselves for admission; for what is familiar to one class of readers may be quite new to another. Many maxims of the most famous writers of our language, and numberless curious and happy turns from enters and poets, have knocked at the door, and it was hard to deny them. But to admit these Simply on their own merits, without assurance that the general reader would readily recognize them as old friends, was aside from the purpose of this collection. Still, it has been thought better to incur the risk of erring on the side of fulness. With the many additions to the English writers, the present edition contains selections from the French, and from the wit and wisdom of the ancients. A few pas sages have been admitted without a claim to familiarity, but solely on the ground of coincidence of thought. The object of this work is to show, to some extent, the obligations our language owes to various authors for numerous phrases and familiar quotations which have become "household words." This Collection, originally made without any view of publication, has been considerably enlarged by additions from an English work on a similar plan, and is now sent forth with the hope that it may be found a convenient book of reference.
Excerpt from The Book of Familiar Quotations: Being a Collection of Popular Extracts and Aphorisms From the Works of the Best Authors Some of the extracts which follow scarcely come under the denomination of Familiar Quotations, strictly speaking: as illustrating this may be named some of the passages from Byron and Scott, as also the lines from a love song, in the modern taste, by Swift. These selected pieces, however, are, it is believed, all of a salient character, and are frequently alluded to in the course of conversation and literary discussion. Excerpt from An Index to Familiar Quotations Selected Principally From British Authors: With Parallel Passages From Various Writers Ancient and Modern The reference to the chapter, act, scene, book, and number of the line of each quotation, was given in Murray's Handbook of Familiar Quotations, and in Whitaker's Book of Familiar Quotations, and in my own, all which were contemporaneously issued in the early part of the year 1854; and to us credit is due for that improvement. The present volume contains upwards of six thousand four hundred quotations and parallel passages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
