Idiomatic Expressions and Somatic Experience in Psychoanalysis examines how verbal and non-verbal language is used in the consulting room, and how those different modes of communication interact to provide a more comprehensive picture of the patient's relational world. It is the product of a comprehensive research project exploring the affinity between idiomatic expressions and somatic behaviors and symptoms. Idiomatic expressions are viewed as bridging the gap between somatic sensations and mental experiences. Ravit Raufman deals with one of the fundamental aspects in human life- the way our behavior is governed by unconscious primary experiences, suggesting methods by which to decipher patient behaviors that are apparently detached and unreasonable. The first part presents case studies of people who enact and revive verbal idiomatic expressions through their behavior. The second describes how therapists use non-verbal mechanisms, operating in their own minds, to understand their patients’ inner lives. Based on relational and inter-subjective approaches in psychoanalysis, the case studies illustrate the various ways in which the therapist's subjective experience is "objectively" used to learn about patients’ subjective relational experience, so as to verbally formulate experiences that are pre-verbal. Emotional experiences and emotional responses have been mostly considered a psychobiological phenomenon, which man genetically acquired from the animal world. Animals require emotionally controlled behavior for dealing with the survival needs, in terms of needs for food, safety, and sexual gratifications. These emotional responses may often occur without perception or awareness of the presence of the causative stimulus, which we have called processing of the unconscious mind. Outside this realm, man cognitively processes every emotional state and response, and labels them, which may be considered to have positive or negative effects on the individual and others. However, we are aware that the same emotional arousal is the driving force in every individual, and that man cannot lift even a little finger without emotional arousal. This phenomenal role of emotion has been largely ignored and many of us do not care for the proper emotional development of a child and strategic and sincere application of emotional arousal in the later years. The whole emphasis on the mind of man has been invested in many, on consciousness, which today we know is a mere fallacy. Learning to control emotional arousal is a basic lesson of social conditioning, which gives man ability to control thinking, actions and responses. Without emotional controls, actions and responses are automatically initiated, when the emotional arousal reaches certain critical level. Natural languages – idioms such as English and Cantonese, Zulu and Amharic, Basque and Nicaraguan Sign Language – allow their speakers to convey meaning and transmit meaning to one another. But what is meaning exactly? What is this thing that words convey and speakers communicate? Few questions are as elusive as this. Yet, few features are as essential to who we are and what we do as human beings as the capacity to convey meaning through language. In this book, Gaetano Fiorin and Denis Delfitto disclose a notion of linguistic meaning that is structured around three distinct, yet interconnected dimensions: a linguistic dimension, relating meaning to the linguistic forms that convey it; a material dimension, relating meaning to the material and social conditions of its environment; and a psychological dimension, relating meaning to the cognitive lives of its users. By paying special attention to the puzzle surrounding first-person reference – the way speakers exploit language to refer to themselves – and by capitalizing on a number of recent findings in the cognitive sciences, Fiorin and Delfitto develop the original hypothesis that meaningful language shares the same underlying logical and metaphysical structure of sense perception, effectively acting as a system of classification and discrimination at the interface between cognitive agents and their ecologies.

Emotions in Technology Design: From Experience to Ethics provides a multi-dimensional approach to studying, designing and comprehending emotions in design.
