The conferences in the Carpathians are called by tradition ‘schools’, but are a combination of a school and a conference with invited talks and communications. This was the 24th Carpathian summer school in physics, a tradition since 1964, and the 4th with the current title. Its main objectives are:To educate new generations of specialists in the field of nuclear structure and reactions, of nuclear astrophysics and astroparticles. -To help disseminate and discuss the latest developments in the fields of interest among the participants, to facilitate interactions across field boundaries. -The mixed character school-conference is meant to facilitate the contacts between generations of scientists. -To create conditions of direct contacts between best specialists in the above fields and the local researchers, in particular from Romania.

The Carpathian Summer School of Physics 2016 was organized in Sinaia, Romania, as the 27th edition of a tradition that began in 1964. For this two-week, mixed format school-conference, more than 100 students and lecturers gathered to discuss topics pertaining to nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, and astroparticle physics, as well as applications of small accelerators. The subject matter ranged from the minute energies of individual nuclear reactions in stars to the gigantic energy releases in supernovae; from sub-nucleonic sizes to the size of the whole universe; from small electrostatic accelerators to new radioactive ion beam facilities; and to the most powerful lasers to be used for nuclear physics.
The book gives an extended review of theoretical and observational aspects of neutron star physics. With masses comparable to that of the Sun and radii of about ten kilometres, neutron stars are the densest stars in the Universe. This book describes all layers of neutron stars, from the surface to the core, with the emphasis on their structure and equation of state. Theories of dense matter are reviewed, and used to construct neutron star models. Hypothetical strange quark stars and possible exotic phases in neutron star cores are also discussed. Also covered are the effects of strong magnetic fields in neutron star envelopes.
Giant resonances are collective excitations of the atomic nucleus, a typical quantum many-body system. The study of these fundamental modes has in many respects contributed to our understanding of the bulk behavior of the nucleus and of the dynamics of non-equilibrium excitations. Although the phenomenon of giant resonances has been known for more than 50 years, a large amount of information has been obtained in the last 10 years. This book gives an up-to-date, comprehensive account of our present knowledge of giant resonances. It presents the experimental facts and the techniques used to obtain that information, describes how these facts fit into theoretical concepts and how this allows to determine various nuclear properties which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Included as an introduction is an overview of the main facts, a short history of how the field has developed in the course of time, and a discussion of future perspectives.
This book introduces the reader to the field of nuclear astrophysics, i.e. the acquisition and reading of measurements on unstable isotopes in different parts of the universe. The authors explain the role of radioactivities in astrophysics, discuss specific sources of cosmic isotopes and in which special regions they can be observed. More specifically, the authors address stars of different types, stellar explosions which terminate stellar evolutions, and other explosions triggered by mass transfers and instabilities in binary stars. They also address nuclear reactions and transport processes in interstellar space, in the contexts of cosmic rays and of chemical evolution. A special chapter is dedicated to the solar system which even provides material samples. The book also contains a description of key tools which astrophysicists employ in those particular studies and a glossary of key terms in astronomy with radioactivities.
